Abstract: An apparatus and method for fastening dissimilar metals like steel and aluminum utilizes a steel rivet and a spot welding machine. The rivet and metals are stacked and the heat from the welder's electric current softens the lower melting point aluminum allowing the rivet to penetrate the aluminum and weld to the steel layer. The fastener may be used to join stacks with several layers of different materials and may be used to apply a threaded socket or stud made from steel or titanium to an aluminum or magnesium alloy structure. Layers of non-conductive materials like plastic and ceramics may also be affixed to a conductive layer using the fastener made from a compatible material that extends through a pilot hole.

Abstract: Examples of rivet-type fastener are described. The rivet-type fastener may further include a fastener pin. The fastener pin includes a planar head portion and a shaft longitudinally extending from the head portion. The fastener pin may further include a cantilevered snap element at a distal end of the shaft. A portion of the cantilevered snap element is flexibly moveable with respect to the axis of shaft. The rivet-type fastener comprises a fastener body which in turn comprises a collared portion with a central opening. A plurality of elongated portions extend orthogonally from the collared portion, wherein the elongated portions are radially positioned about the central axis and about the edges of the central opening.

Abstract: A fastener for use in joining dissimilar materials manufactured by the process of producing the fastener with an external surface that forms an electrically insulating oxide layer when subjected to oxidation and, after manufacture and prior to use, subjecting the fastener to a pre-oxidation process to grow the desired oxide layer in situ on the external surface of the fastener. The present invention also provides a dissimilar material joint in which the pre-oxidized fastener is used to mechanically join dissimilar materials with the oxide layer electrically insulating the fastener from at least one of the dissimilar materials. The fastener may be a rivet used in friction self-piercing riveting (F-SPR). The fastener may be fabricated from an alloy capable of forming Al2O3 or Cr2O3 by thermal oxidation. The fastener may be pre-coated with Al or Cr that functions as a seed layer to form Al2O3 or Cr2O3.

Abstract: An apparatus providing mating alignment between internal threading of a rivet nut and the external threading of the mandrel of an unclaimed installation tool before anchoring the rivet nut in a hole in a substrate, or the external threading of an unclaimed threaded fastener after anchoring in the substrate hole. The improvements include a bushing sleeve seated in a counterbore in the rivet nut, for guiding the external threading of the mandrel or fastener to the internal threading of the rivet nut. The sleeve also enables play during upset of the rivet nut, and provides visual confirmation whether the rivet nut has been properly anchored in the hole of substrate.

Abstract: This invention relates to an assembly of regions (10a, 10b) of composite parts (2a, 2b) with thermoplastic matrix, including a plurality of riveting points along regions (10a, 10) of the parts that overlap through the superposition of two faces (12a, 12b) of these regions (10a, 10b) which are positioned facing one another, each region (10a, 10b) having another, opposite, face (11a, 11b) which remains visible with the part (2a, 2b). The riveting is performed using assembly ties (6) made of thermoplastic resin-based composite material compatible with the material of the parts (2a, 2b). These ties (6), which are made up at least in part of a stitch of backstitch produced using a filament of a material selected from a fiber coated with aramid resin, a carbon fiber and a glass fiber, are embedded in said regions (10a, 10b) and passing right through the same with an orientation comprised between 30° and 90° with respect to their faces (11a, 11b; 12a, 12b).

Abstract: A method for joining two workpieces, which each have a joining surface for joining the workpieces, applies a viscous adhesive to a first joining surface in the form of a continuous material strand along an application path extending in an application direction. The joining surfaces are arranged facing each other in order to delimit an intermediate gap, in which the material strand is arranged. The workpieces are joined to each other in the region of the material strand by at least one further joining device. The first joining surface includes an alternately arranged hybrid adhering regions and adhering regions. A further joining device is arranged in each hybrid adhering region. The adhesive amount applied in each length unit measured in the application direction in the hybrid adhering regions is less than the adhesive amount applied in each length unit measured in the application direction in the adhering regions.

Abstract: Systems and method are provided for joining components. A pin may have a head, and a stem extending from the head. The stem may have a tapered section. A collar may have a shank with a through-hole. Another tapered section may be formed by the shank so that a tapered surface of the tapered section faces into the through-hole. The pin and the collar may be configured so that the stem is received in the through-hole. The tapered sections mate together, and the tapered surface contacts the tapered section of the stem.

Abstract: A battery pack is provided including: a plurality of battery cells arranged in multiple battery cell rows; one or more heat exchange spaces; and a device for providing heat exchange to the battery pack. Further, the device includes a heat conduction medium passage arranged in the heat exchange spaces, such that the heat conduction medium passage surrounds multiple battery cells each battery cell row. The heat conduction medium passage is provided with at least a first group of channels and a second group of channels, which are in contact with the surface of each battery cell, and a heat conduction medium is provided in the first group of channels and the second of channels. The heat conduction medium flows in the first group of channels in a direction opposite from the flow of the heat conduction medium in the second group of channels.

Abstract: An assembly is provided that includes a castellated upper substrate defining a plurality of alternating troughs and ridges. A lower substrate is disposed adjacent the upper castellated substrate, and an adhesive material is disposed between the castellated upper substrate and the lower substrate. A fastener extends through a trough of the castellated upper substrate, through the adhesive material, and into the lower substrate. A method of assembling the upper and lower substrates is also provided, which includes plastically deforming the castellated upper substrate to reduce an intake of air between the substrates.
