The present invention relates to methods for producing metal-supported thin layer skeletal catalyst structures, to methods for producing catalyst support structures without separately applying an intermediate washcoat layer, and to novel catalyst compositions produced by these methods. Catalyst precursors may be interdiffused with the underlying metal support then activated to create catalytically active skeletal alloy surfaces. The resulting metal-anchored skeletal layers provide increased conversion per geometric area compared to conversions from other types of supported alloy catalysts of similar bulk compositions, and provide resistance to activity loss when used under severe on-stream conditions. Particular compositions of the metal-supported skeletal catalyst alloy structures can be used for conventional steam methane reforming to produce syngas from natural gas and steam, for hydrodeoxygenation of pyrolysis bio-oils, and for other metal-catalyzed reactions inter alia.

A dehydrogenation catalyst is formed by forming a mixture comprising a bayerite aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3), a lanthanum (La) source, a cerium (Ce) source, a barium (Ba) source, a zirconium (Zr) source, and water into a shaped body. The shaped body is calcined at a temperature of at least 750° C. to form a catalyst support. The catalyst support is treated with a dehydrogenation catalyst component to form a treated catalyst support containing the dehydrogenation catalyst component. The treated catalyst support is then calcined. The resulting catalyst composition may be used by contacting a paraffin hydrocarbon feed with a catalyst within a reactor in the presence of steam under dehydrogenation reaction conditions suitable to form dehydrogenated hydrocarbon products.

The invention relates to catalysts for the methanation of carbon monoxide, which comprise metal-doped nickel oxide of the composition (in mol %) (M1)a(M2)bNicOxwhere a=0.1 to 5 mol %, b=3 to 20 mol % and c=100−(a+b) mol % and M1 comprises at least one metal of transition group VII or VIII of the PTE (=Periodic Table of the Elements) and M2 comprises at least one metal of transition group III or IV of the PTE. The catalysts can be used as pure catalysts or as supported catalysts, if appropriate applied as coatings to an inert support body. They display high conversion and high selectivity and are used in methanation processes of CO in hydrogen-containing gas mixtures, in particular in reformates for operation of fuel cells. The catalysts of the invention can be prepared by precipitation, impregnation, sol-gel methods, sintering processes or by powder synthesis.

Selective hydrogenation processes using a catalyst composition which, preferably comprises a glass substrate, with one or more functional surface active constituents integrated on and/or in the substrate surface. A substantially nonporous substrate has (i) a total surface area between about 0.01 m2/g and 10 m2/g; and (ii) a predetermined isoelectric point (IEP) obtained in a pH range greater than 0, preferably greater than or equal to 4.5, or more preferably greater than or equal to 6.0, but less than or equal to 14. At least one catalytically-active region may be contiguous or discontiguous and has a mean thickness less than or equal to about 30 nm, preferably less than or equal to 20 nm and more preferably less than or equal to 10 nm. Preferably, the substrate is a glass composition having a SARCNa less than or equal to about 0.5.
