The present invention relates to the synthesis of succinimides, in particular to a method for the synthesis of a succinimide compound, comprising the step of reacting an alkyne, with carbon monoxide and ammonia or an amine, in the presence of an iron catalyst, wherein the reaction is carried out in an amine liquid phase and/or in the absence of an ether solvent. The succinimides may be reduced to quaternary ammonium cations which may be used as structure directing agents in the synthesis of molecular sieves.

An aluminosilicate ZSM-12 may be prepared de novo in a small crystalline form from a reaction mixture containing a source of silica and a source of alumina. A small crystalline form of aluminosilicate ZSM-12 may also be prepared from a small crystalline form of borosilicate ZSM-12 by replacement of boron in the borosilicate ZSM-12 framework with aluminum. The aluminosilicate ZSM-12 is useful as an isomerization selective catalyst in processes such as isomerization dewaxing hydrocarbon feedstocks.

A process is described for synthesizing a porous, crystalline material having the framework structure of ZSM-12 of the formula: (n)YO2:X2O3 wherein X is a trivalent element, Y is a tetravalent element and n is between about 80 and about 250. In the process, a mixture capable of forming said material is prepared comprising sources of alkali or alkaline earth metal (M), an oxide of trivalent element (X), an oxide of tetravalent element (Y), hydroxyl ions (OFF), water and tetraethylammonium cations (R), wherein said mixture has a composition, in terms of mole ratios, within the following ranges: YO2/X2O3=100 to 300; H2O/YO2=5 to 15; OH−/YO2=0.10 to 0.30; M/YO2=0.05 to 0.30; and R/YO2=0.10 to 0.20. The mixture is reacted at a temperature of at least about 300° F. (149° C.) for a time of less than about 50 hours to form crystals of the crystalline material and the crystalline material is then recovered.

The process enables ZSM-12 to be produced at silica/alumina molar ratios below 50 with little or no co-production of impurity phases. Small crystal forms of ZSM-12 can also be produced using the process of the invention.
