A method for operating a brake system for motor vehicles comprises in a normal control mode of the system, a displacement of a piston for a pressure supply device is terminated, and inlet valves of the wheel brakes are closed in the event of a specified brake condition. The normal control mode is switched to a special control mode in the event of a specified condition for the pressure supply device. In the event of the specified brake condition in the special control mode, a displacement of the piston of the pressure supply device is terminated by outputting an actuation signal to the pressure supply device, and for at least one selected wheel brake, the corresponding inlet valve is kept open and the corresponding outlet valve is opened at least temporarily while the inlet valves of the remaining wheel brakes are closed.

Linkage (144) responsive to an input member (152) moves the control valve (114) to initially terminate communication from the second bore (106) to the return port (120) and direct the flow of a first portion of the supply hydraulic fluid to the chamber (102) to effect a brake application while a second portion thereof is communicated to the steering gear (16). A regulator (24) is connected to the pump (12) for receiving and directing the flow of supply hydraulic fluid to the inlet port (118) of the housing (100) of the booster (14). The regulator (24) responds to a preset hydraulic fluid pressure in the first portion of the supply hydraulic fluid by metering the flow of the supply pressurized hydraulic fluid to the inlet port (118) of the brake booster and thereafter directly communicating a corresponding portion of the supply hydraulic fluid through a port (210) to the steering gear (16). A braking system is disclosed that has a manually-actuatable master cylinder having two pressure chambers. A first pressure chamber hydraulically controls a flow control valve through which the pressure medium flows during servo-braking in order to adjust its regulating cross-section to produce a defined dynamic pressure that is applied to a first piston/cylinder arrangement, connected to the flow control valve, of a brake application element to produce a braking force. A second pressure chamber can be connected to a second piston of a brake application element so that a braking force can be applied to the brake application element if the servo-force fails. Also, instead of the second piston/cylinder arrangement, a separate separator piston/cylinder arrangement can be provided that is inserted between the second pressure chamber and the piston/cylinder arrangement. As a result, sufficient braking force is produced both in servo-force braking and if the servo-force fails. Also, an appropriate response by the braking forces to the master cylinder is effected so that there is always good actuating feedback.
