    Abstract: An apparatus including a flexible substrate; and an overhanging electronic component island, the electronic component island configured to be less flexible than the flexible substrate and including one or more electronic components, wherein the electronic component island includes a substrate-face with a connection portion and an overhang portion, the connection portion being mechanically coupled to a surface of the flexible substrate via a single connection-support pad and the overhang portion configured to overhang and be substantially free of the underlying flexible substrate such that the underlying flexible substrate can be strained independently from the overhang portion under operational strains of the flexible substrate.

    Abstract: An apparatus, method and computer program wherein the apparatus comprises: a plurality of quantum dot-graphene field effect transistors; circuitry configured to provide an individual drain-source bias voltage to each of a plurality of quantum dot-graphene field effect transistors, wherein different individual drain-source bias voltages have different parameters, to enable the plurality of quantum dot-graphene field effect transistors to detect light from a user of an apparatus; and circuitry configured to obtain output signals from each of a plurality of quantum dot-graphene field effect transistors where the output signal is dependent upon both the light detected by the quantum dot-graphene field effect transistor and the parameters of the drain-source bias voltage to enable the obtained output signals to be used as a scrambled identification signal of the user of the apparatus.

    Abstract: An apparatus comprising a processor and memory including computer program code, the memory and computer program code configured to, with the processor, enable the apparatus at least to: based on a predetermined dark current component for each photodetector in an array of photodetectors, identify a plurality of subsets of photodetectors from the array for signal readout and amplification by a readout circuit, each photodetector of the array configured to provide a photodetector output signal comprising the dark current component and an image component on exposure to incident electromagnetic radiation from a target scene, wherein each subset of photodetectors is identified such that the combined dark current component of the constituent photodetector output signals for each subset is substantially the same; and provide the identified plurality of subsets for use in signal readout and amplification by the readout circuit.

    Abstract: An apparatus (1) for photodetection comprises a substrate (3) having elongate apertures (5) and photodetectors (11) provided on the substrate (3). The apertures (5) act as a collimator so that only photons (17) aligned with the length of the apertures (5) pass through the apertures from the first end (7) to the second end (9). The photodetectors (11) are field effect transistors having channel made of graphene (13) functionalised with quantum dots. The quantum dots convert incident photons (17) into electrical charge. The apparatus (1) is suitable for a lensless camera or for x-ray detection.

    Abstract: The disclosed device for photodetection includes a first layer of a semiconducting material, a second layer of a two dimensional material, wherein the first and second layers are configured to form an electrical junction, the electrical junction having a potential energy barrier, and a third layer of a material configured to generate one or more excitons upon absorption of incident electromagnetic radiation. Charge separation from the one or more excitons generated in the third layer affects the Fermi energy of the second layer, leading to a change of the potential energy barrier height of the electrical junction. Such a photodetection device has a high sensitivity to the incident electromagnetic radiation. An array of such devices can be applied as an imaging device.
