Abstract: A catalytic unit for treating gases, particularly exhaust gases of internal combustion engines, comprising a housing, adapted to be connected in an exhaust gas line, and a monolithic carrier body provided with a catalytic agent. The carrier body is mounted within the housing by an intermediate layer arranged in compression between the circumferential surface of the carrier body and the housing. According to the invention, the intermediate layer is so compressed by the surrounding housing that it exerts a pressure on the surface of the carrier body in the range of 20 to 80 N/cm.sup.2.

Abstract: A high temperature resistant, heat insulating ceramic material comprises a mixture of 30 to 60 volume percent aluminum oxide power and 70 to 40 volume percent alumina-silica fibers sintered together at temperatures between 1200.degree. and 1550.degree. C. so that .alpha.-aluminum oxide is present in the sintered material. The ceramic material can be used as a material for hollow bodies which are charged with hot gases, and particularly, for cores of reactors and/or catalytic converters in exhaust gas purification systems of internal combustion engines.

Abstract: A deformable structure for occupant protection in vehicles has hollow energy-absorbing elements which are disposed between walls or other components. The hollow bodies are tube portions which are predeformed perpendicularly to their longitudinal axes and which are disposed with the tube axes parallel to the walls individually in a predeterminable arrangement or joined together in single-layer or multilayer fashion, and wherein the degree of predeformation is between 0.1% and 85% of the open width of the undeformed tube in the direction of the deformation impact force.

Abstract: A connection between non-oxidic ceramic (ceranox) material and metallic material is formed by providing a recess in the metallic material having oppositely facing internal surfaces between which is positioned a portion of a ceramic component with intervening gaps. The gaps are filled with a high temperature solder. The solder is preferably melted into position between the metallic and ceramic components in an evacuated soldering oven according to a stepped temperature profile.
