The relative position of metering sleeves (56) with respect to pumping pistons (32) is controlled electro-hydraulically by a control circuit (60, 160). The control circuit (60, 160) receives pressurized fluid from the pump delivery gallery (50) or another high pressure area (50, 52) and, using a pressure reducer (64, 164), reduces the operating pressure within the control circuit (60, 160) to a substantially constant pressure lower than the pump output pressure. Lower operating pressure within the control circuit (60, 160) improves the manufacturability of the control circuit components and helps to achieve better control of the pump output.

The pump, rail pressure control valve and reservoir are mounted directly to the engine, receiving and discharging fluid through internal engine passageways, thereby eliminating the usual tubing, and fittings. The pump itself is compact and relatively short in the axial direction, leaving space for mounting such things as a cylindrical housing having belt grooves in its outer surface and a viscous damper on the crankshaft between the pump and the terminal crankshaft end.

Variable delivery from the pump is achieved by an improved sleeve metering approach. The sleeve surrounds the reciprocating piston and is manipulated to control venting of pumped fluid through vent ports in the piston. The sleeve is moved by preferably being the armature of a solenoid assembly. The varying of current to the solenoid coil alters the axial position of the sleeve relative to the piston to vary the effective pumping stroke of the piston.

An improved electronically-controlled fluid injector system comprises a fluid storage chamber and a direct-operated check. Pressurization of fluid in the storage chamber begins before the start of fluid injection. Fluid injection begins by hydraulically unbalancing the check. Fluid injection sharply ends by hydraulically balancing the check to allow a biasing device to close the check. The present invention provides improved control of several fluid injection parameters, including higher peak fluid injection capability and less fluid injection pressure drop at the end of injection, resulting in improved engine performance and lower emissions, noise, and wear.
