Injection of gaseous fuel from a second nozzle outlet set is facilitated by energizing a second electrical actuator to open an admission valve to flood a gaseous nozzle chamber with high pressure gaseous fuel above a valve opening pressure that opens a conventional spring biased check to facilitate gaseous fuel injection out of second nozzle outlet set.

Steel rod stock is shaped into a fuel injector tip having a central axis and including a shank extending between a mating end and a nozzle end. An inner surface of the fuel injector tip includes a conical needle valve seat and defines a nozzle chamber and a sac on opposite sides of the needle valve seat. The mating end includes a injector stack surface and an injector body contact surface. After shaping the fuel injector tip, it is a case hardened to a hardness in excess of HRC 55. Next, the nozzle end is shaped, after the case hardening step, to include a plurality of nozzle surfaces that each define one of a plurality of nozzle outlets extending between the sac and the outer surface. The inner surface and the nozzle surfaces are then autofrettaged to induce compressive residual stress at the case hardened needle valve seat, the case hardened sac and at least a portion of the nozzle surfaces closest to the sac.

The present invention relates generally to variable discharge pumps, and specifically pumps used in fuel injection systems. Typically, such pumps include a dedicated spill control valve for each pumping plunger, that also doubles as an avenue for refilling the pumping chambers. This double duty results in compromise in the design of the spill control valve to operate effectively in both spill and fill modes. The present invention addresses these issues by utilizing a shuttle valve member to allow the spill function and the fill function to be addressed in separate passageways while also allowing a pair of plungers to share a common spill control valve. The present invention find particular application in pumps used to supply high pressure fluid to common rails for fuel injection systems.

A pumping element for a hydraulic pump is provided. The pumping element includes a cylinder forming a compression chamber and having a discharge port. A piston having a pressure surface, a spill port, and a passageway connecting the pressure surface with the spill port is disposed in the cylinder for reciprocal movement between a first position and a second position. The pressure surface of the piston is adapted to increase the pressure of a fluid disposed in the compression chamber as the piston moves between the first position and the second position. The pressurized fluid flows through the discharge port of the cylinder. A metering sleeve is disposed around the piston and is configured to selectively cover the spill port as the piston reciprocates between the first and second positions. The metering sleeve has a groove that is adapted for fluid communication with the spill port as the piston reciprocates between the first and second positions.

A pumping system for supplying high pressure actuation fluid to individual fuel injectors of an engine equipped with a hydraulically-actuated fuel injection system wherein the three major elements of the system, namely, the pump, the rail pressure control valve and the bleed-off sump or reservoir are physically separated and spaced from one another. The pump is annular, having a central opening through which the engine crankshaft passes. The crankshaft and pump wobble plate are rotationally coupled by opposing flats on each. The pump, rail pressure control valve and reservoir are mounted directly to the engine, receiving and discharging fluid through internal engine passageways, thereby eliminating the usual tubing, and fittings. The pump itself is compact and relatively short in the axial direction, leaving space for mounting such things as a cylindrical housing having belt grooves in its outer surface and a viscous damper on the crankshaft between the pump and the terminal crankshaft end.
