Abstract:
Articles subject to ice formation during normal use are described. The article comprises a repellent surface such that the receding contact angle of the surface with water ranges from 90 degrees to 135 degrees. The repellent surface comprises a fluoro chemical material, typically in combination with a non-fluorinated organic polymeric binder. The fluorochemical material is preferably a compound having the formula: (Rf-L-P)nA Rf is a fluorinated group; L is independently an organic divalent linking group; P is a catenary, divalent heteroatom-containing carbonyl moiety, such as —C(0)0-; A is hydrocarbon moiety; and n typically ranges from 1 to 3. Also described are methods of making an article comprising providing an article subject to ice formation during normal use and providing a liquid repellent surface, as described herein, on at least a portion of the article.
Abstract:
A fluid control film is provided that includes fluid control channels extending along a channel longitudinal axis. Each of the fluid control channels has a surface and is configured to allow capillary movement of liquid in the channels. The fluid control film further includes a hydrophilic surface treatment covalently bonded to at least a portion of the surface of the fluid control channels. The fluid control film exhibits a capillary rise percent recovery of at least ten percent. Typically, the hydrophilic surface treatment includes functional groups selected from a non-zwitterionic sulfonate, a non-zwitterionic carboxylate, a zwitterionic sulfonate, a zwitterionic carboxylate, a zwitterionic phosphate, a zwitterionic phosphonic acid, and/or a zwitterionic phosphonate. A process for forming a fluid control film is also provided. Further, a process for cleaning a structured surface is provided, including providing a structured surface and a hydrophilic surface treatment covalently bonded to at least a portion of the structured surface, and soiling the structured surface with a material. The process also includes removing the material by at least one of submerging the structured surface in an aqueous fluid, rinsing the structured surface with an aqueous fluid, condensing an aqueous fluid on the structure surface, or wiping the structured surface with a cleaning implement.
Abstract:
A vehicle sensor system comprising an exterior surface and a polymeric film on the exterior surface. The polymeric film has a first surface opposite the exterior surface, and the first surface is either hydrophobic or hydrophilic.

Abstract:
Presently described are components of a spray application system. At least one component comprises a liquid repellent surface layer. The liquid repellent surface (e.g. layer) may comprise a porous layer and a lubricant impregnated into pores of the porous layer; a fluoropolymer; a fluorochemical material and an organic polymeric binder; or a fluorochemical material melt additive and a thermoplastic polymeric material component. The component is typically a liquid reservoir, a liquid reservoir liner, a lid for a liquid reservoir or liner, or a combination thereof. In some embodiments, the component comprises a thermoplastic polymeric material. In some favored embodiments, the component is a removable liquid reservoir or liner. In some favored embodiments, the component is a collapsible liquid reservoir or liner. The spray application system typically further comprises a gravity-fed spray gun. Also described are spray application systems, methods of using a spray application system, as well as methods of making a component of a spray application system wherein the component has a liquid repellent surface.

Abstract:
An abrasive article is provided which comprises a plurality of layers in the following order: a backing; an abrasive layer; a primer layer comprising clay particles, wherein the clay particles are agglomerated and form a layer; and a supersize coat comprising a metal salt of a long-chain fatty acid. The addition of the aforementioned primer layer can significantly reduce loading of swarf and improve both the cut and expected lifetime of the abrasive article.
