Abstract:
A system and a method for providing a film having a matte finish. The system includes means for providing a coated substrate, the coated substrate comprising a first coatable material applied to a substrate, the coatable material forming a first major surface of the coated substrate; means for changing the viscosity of the first coatable material from a first viscosity to a second viscosity; a face-side roller having an outer surface positioned to contact the first major surface of the coated substrate to impart a matte finish thereon; and optionally, means for hardening the first coatable material. The method of the invention includes the steps of (1) providing a coated substrate comprising a coatable material disposed on a substrate, the coatable material providing a first major surface of the coated substrate; (2) changing the viscosity of the coatable material from the initial viscosity to a second viscosity; (3) contacting the first major surface of the coated substrate with at least one face-side roller to impart a matte finish; and (4) optionally, hardening the coatable material to provide the film.

Provided are a tape, apparatus, and method that relate generally to a single layer adhesive which functions as a dicing tape and also as a die attach adhesive for dicing thinned wafers and subsequent die attach operations of the diced chips in semiconductor device fabrication. The tape, apparatus, and method include a backing with a surface modification that includes a pattern.
Abstract:
A membrane electrode assembly is provided comprising an ion conducting membrane and one or more electrode layers that comprise nanostructured elements, wherein the nanostructured elements are in incomplete contact with the ion conducting membrane. This invention also provides methods to make the membrane electrode assembly of the invention. The membrane electrode assembly of this invention is suitable for use in electrochemical devices, including proton exchange membrane fuel cells, electrolyzers, chlor-alkali separation membranes, and the like.
Abstract:
Hand-holdable novelty article comprising a handle, a light source and a plurality of sections of color shifting film. The light source is preferably disposed within an end of the handle. The plurality of sections of color shifting film extend from the end of the handle. During use, light from the light source interacts with the plurality of strands of color shifting film, producing a brilliant colored effect. Movement of the plurality of sections of color shifting film produces multiple colors.

A composite including a polymeric film having a first generally planar major surface and an opposite second major surface defined by a multiplicity of elongate parallel contiguous ridge portions. The ridge portions each have a generally triangular cross section and elongate obscured and transmitting second major surface portions intersecting at the apex of the ridge with the obscured second major surface portion being on the side of the ridge generally facing a first end of the sheet and the transmitting second major surface portions being on the side of the ridge portions adjacent a second end of the sheet. The film can provide visual transmission between its first major surface and the transmitting second major surface portions while coatings along the obscured second major surface portions prevent viewing of visual images through the film; whereas the composite can also provide light transmission between the first major surface and the transmitting second major surface portions, while the coatings along the obscured second major surface portions restrict light transmission.

A method for manufacturing flexible cube corner retroreflective sheeting comprising the steps of: a) providing a tool having a molding surface; b) applying to the molding surface a volume of a flowable resin composition; c) contacting the resin composition with a first major surface of an overlay film; d) minimizing excess resin composition; e) curing the resin composition to form a sheeting comprising an array of cube corner elements bonded to the overlay film; f) removing the sheeting from the tool; and g) applying mechanical stress to the sheeting so as to cause a fractured separation of substantially each individual cube corner element from surrounding cube corner elements. Also, flexible retroreflective sheetings comprising: a) a two dimensional array of substantially independent cube corner elements, the array comprising a first polymeric material, and b) an overlay film having two major surfaces and comprising of a second polymeric material, the array being bonded to the first major surface of the overlay film. Also safety devices incorporating such sheetings.

Articles including post-formed multilayer optical films with layers of at least one strain-induced birefringent material, methods of manufacturing such articles by post-forming multilayer optical films, and multilayer optical films that are particularly well-suited to post-forming operations are disclosed. The articles, methods and multilayer optical films of the present invention allow for post-forming of multilayer optical films including strain-induced index of refraction differentials while retaining the desired optical properties of the multilayer optical films.
