A fully reticulated polyurethane foam is treated with a solution of a phenolic resin and coal-tar pitch in a tetrahydrofuran solvent. The resin and pitch are absorbed into the polyurethane strands, thereby becoming an integral part of such strands. The structure is subsequently heat-treated through a rigidizing cure cycle and through a carbonizing cycle, to obtain a fully reticulated, low-density carbon foam. This resulting structure may be activated to high surface area values by selective oxidation of the carbon article; or activation can be effected by carbonizing the cured article in the presence of metal chlorides.

In cold box core making techniques, a catalyst such as dimethyethylamine (DMEA) is contacted with a core material-resin binder mixture in a core box to cause a curing of the core material. The catalyst is preferably provided from a suitable proportioning apparatus as a mixture comprising at least 10 percent and typically 12 percent liquid DMEA in an inert carrier medium such as either carbon dioxide or nitrogen gas. The catalyst/carrier mixture is supplied to a pressure tank as a ''make-up'' for catalyst entrapped in core material during curing. Surplus catalyst/carrier mixture is extracted from the core box under a vacuum force, compressed, dried, purified and returned to the pressure tank for further use as a curing agent.

The brominated compound is useful as an inhalation anesthetic and as a solvent and dispersant for fluorinated materials.

A combined heat/cool system, having at least two heat exchanger ducts, for providing heating during winter and cooling during summer. For the cooling system, an open cycle, regenerated, production gas turbine drives a high speed centrifugal Freon compressor in a conventional Rankine refrigeration cycle. For heat system operation, a shaft coupling permits direct connection of the gas turbine to a high speed compressor assembly of a reverse Brayton air cycle heat pump system. A condenser, reservoir, sub-cooler superheat exchanger, expansion valve, and evaporator function as conventional components in the Rankine cycle. Air and/or water streams are passed in heat exchange relationship with the evaporator coils and condenser coils to transfer heat to and from the Rankine system, thereby heating and cooling the ventilation streams accordingly. In the winter, the ventilation stream is heated by being passed by the condenser coils. The evaporator coils continually operate at approximately 40*F during both the winter and summer. In the summer, the ventilation stream passing through the associated heat exchanger is cooled and dehumidified by the cold evaporator coils. In the winter the outside air temperature can drop below 40*F, whereby no heat would be transferred to the evaporator. Under these conditions the mechanical coupling and air cycle heat pump are energized, whereby the outside ambient air is heated by compression and passed over the evaporator coils to provide heat to the coils. The thus cooled ambient air is then expanded in a turbine, and the very cold expanded air at a temperature below that of the ambient air is returned to the outside atmosphere, thus heat is pumped from the outside ambient air to the evaporator.

A disposable balloon type catheter or endotracheal tube is provided in which an improved valve is utilized and which is operable by the insertion of a syringe to the valve inlet passage to open the valve and allow gas to be forced from the syringe into the main and pilot balloons for inflation thereof. The valve itself is of a resilient plastic material having a main passageway with a plug normally blocking the flow of gas through the passageway. At least one radially inwardly directed projection is formed on the interior surface of the passageway and which is engaged by the inserted syringe to distend the passageway internal surface outwardly to allow gas from the syringe to bypass around the periphery of the plug. The disposable catheter also includes a novel design of pilot balloon having a molded plastic tubular extension extending throughout the length of the pilot balloon. The thin balloon material surrounds the tubular extension and is pre-stretched along the extension so that the pilot balloon configuration takes on a shriveled appearance in its non-inflated state.

A method is disclosed for partially fluorinating an alkane or a cycloalkane polyfluoroether feedstock in the liquid phase by contacting it with molecular fluorine at a temperature of about 40*C. to 0*C. Degradation, polymerization, excessive fluorination or combinations of these effects of prior art processes are avoided by the use of the present invention while relatively high yields can be obtained.

Lubricant is carried to the bearing through an axial passage in the spindle and the design is such that most of the lubricant is by-passed from the bearing and returned to the reservoir so that a substantially greater flow of lubricant than that necessary to lubricate the bearing is provided, thereby cooling the spindle.

A flowmeter for measuring fluid flow rates in an enclosed conduit. A symmetrical plate-like body is mounted in the conduit and is pivotable about a central axis. The body is positioned with a plane thereof normally transverse to the flow to be measured, the body being so dimensioned in relation to the conduit as to provide predetermined clearance between the conduit wall and each adjacent lateral edge of the plate. Fluid flowing about the lateral edges of the plate sheds vortices alternately from such edges at a rate related to the fluid flow velocity. Resulting unbalanced forces cause the body to oscillate between a pair of stops at a rate which is a function of the vortex shedding frequency and thus of the flow.
