The method includes removing a lower guide bearing support to enhance circulation of the oil to facilitate cooling of the oil and operating the reactor coolant pump motor at 1,500 rpm without the lower guide bearing support or the oil baffle or flinger ring attached to the lower guide bearing support. The method further includes thickening a keeper to support the guide bearing.

A compressor has a piston attached to an eccentric part of a rotary shaft for being reciprocated to compress refrigerant. In order to provide lubricating oil to the shaft, an oil paddle is mounted in a hole of the eccentric part for pumping oil from the bottom of the compressor. The paddle includes a longitudinally extending gap rendering the paddle flexible so that either end thereof can be mounted in the hole. The paddle also includes slots formed in upper and lower ends of the paddle, respectively, in diametrically opposing relationship to the gap. The lower slot is submersed in the oil to reduce the amount of oil that is pumped and thereby reducing generated noise.

The present invention is a system for replenishing an article of equipment with a supply of lubricant. A housing is provided which defines a reservoir. The housing includes an open end connected to the equipment article such that the reservoir and the equipment article are in fluid communication. Lubricant is disposed in the reservoir and a check valve is secured at the open end of the housing to allow one-way flow of lubricant from the reservoir to the housing. Heating the lubricant to a predetermined temperature results in a precisely ascertainable mass of lubricant being forced from the reservoir to the equipment article.

An apparatus and method for providing improved oil circulation in a marine propulsion system. A supply passage is formed in the gearcase, having its inlet in communication with a space located forwardly of the lower face of the driven gear located in the propeller shaft cavity. The supply passage communicates oil to a drive shaft housing supply passage, and communication between the drive shaft housing supply passage and the upper cavity formed in the drive shaft housing, within which are disposed the lower and upper gears and the input gear, is cut off. Oil flowing through the drive shaft housing supply passage is routed to the universal joint bearings, and temperature of oil at the universal joint bearings is significantly reduced. An improved top cover for placement on top of the drive shaft housing includes an inlet in the top cover for receiving circulating oil pumped by the upper driven gear, which is routed to a recess formed in the underside of the top cover for distribution throughout the upper area of the drive shaft housing. A return passage is formed in the drive shaft housing and the gearcase for routing oil back to the propeller shaft cavity.

A scroll compressor includes a stationary scroll and a rotary scroll rotated by a motor-driven crankshaft. The crankshaft has parallel passages therein which communicate at their lower ends with a pool of lubricating oil. A first of the passages coincides generally with the axis of rotation of the crankshaft at an inclination thereto, and a second of the passages is eccentrically offset. The crankshaft drives a pump which creates a suction in the passages to conduct oil from the pool to the scrolls. A control member is connected to the crankshaft for rotation therewith and is responsive to centrifugal force for gradually closing the second passage as the crankshaft speed exceeds a predetermined value. The amount of oil which is conducted is thus proportional to the crankshaft speed.

An electric motor lubrication system and a method of making the same are disclosed. The motor is a unit bearing motor with an oil reservoir at the bottom of a vertically disposed shaft. The motor rotor has a shaft jounaled in a bearing post on the frame, and the lower end of the poast has two grooves to receive an oil-saturated wick. Each groove has a flat bottom which extens at at least a 5-degree angle relative to the shaft axis, and the intersection of the flat bottom with the shaft aperture forms a plow edge having a component of force directing oil toward the bearing upon shaft rotation. This readily supplies oil upwardly for a vertical shaft motor. A tool shaft is supported for rotation about a vertical axis by means of upper and lower bearings. A motor drives the shaft at least at 500 rpm. A gap is formed radially between the shaft and an adjacent stationary member, the gap extending from one bearing to the other. A reservoir which contains lubricating oil communicates with the gap to supply oil thereto to cool and lubricate. The tool shaft carries a helical thread disposed within the gap which pumps the oil upwardly through the gap and through the bearings to create a hydrostatic bearing for the shaft segment extending between the bearings. The tool shaft is driven by a gear shaft which also is provided with a hydrostatic support by means of oil pumped through a radial gap by means of helical threads which are stationary, but which are disposed closely adjacent a surface of the gear shaft.

The present invention is a self-lubricating bearing for a vertical shaft engine. A stub disposed within the journal bearing has a downwardly facing pocket which propels oil upward by centrifugal force during rotation of the shaft. The upwardly forced oil serves to lubricate the bearing above the stub. The lubrication system can be employed in both stub shaft and through shaft bearings.
