An isocyanate-reactive composition containing a blowing agent that is generally a gas at ambient temperature and pressure which is storage stable is produced by including a phenol or alkylphenol having at least one phenolic hydroxyl group in the isocyanate-reactive composition in an amount sufficient to promote the solubility of the blowing agent. The isocyanate-reactive composition may be stored at ambient conditions rather than under pressure. The isocyanate-reactive composition containing blowing agent may be used to produce foams having good physical properties after storage at ambient temperature and pressure for periods as long as 3 months.

A polyurethane foam is constituted by using a blowing agent selected from the group consisting of iodofluorohydrocarbons, perfluoroalkenes and hydrogen-containing fluoromorpholine derivatives. These blowing agents have a low thermal conductivity and a short life in the air, and thus impose no or very small load such as ozone layer depletion potential (ODP) and global warming potential (GWP) on the environment. The iodofluorohydrocarbon, in particular, can give an incombustibility and self-extinguishing property to the conventionally used inflammable substance such as cyclopentane or the like, and thus is also advantageous from the viewpoint of safety of the thermal insulating material.

A method of inhibiting the decomposition of HCFCs/HFCs which comprises using the decomposition inhibitor mentioned above. In the field of polyurethane foam manufacture using HCFCs/HFCs as blowing agents, the effect of inhibiting the decomposition of HCFCs/HFCs can be produced over a long period of time covering the storage of raw materials, the foam manufacturing process and the use of foamed products.

A blowing agent for use in preparing a polyisocyanate-based foam which comprises a major portion of HCFC-123, a minor portion of HCFC-141b, a branched or unbranched aliphatic alkane having from 6 to 10 carbon atoms or mixtures thereof, and a polyether component which reduces cell size in the resultant polyisocyanate-based foam. The polyether component includes a mixture of polymerized, oxidized perfluorinated propene polyethers having a molecular weight distribution of from about 400 to about 1800 units. Alternatively, the polyether component can be added to the foam precursor materials separate from the blowing agent. Blowing agents and polyether additives for polyurethane-based foams are also provided.

A primary object of the invention is to provide a method of producing rigid polyurethane foams using 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane (HCFC-141b) as the blowing agent while substantially avoiding the formation of decomposition products from HCFC-141b. There is now provided storage stable polyol compositions and polyisocyanate based rigid dosed cell foam made by reacting an organic isocyanate with polyol compositions in the presence of a blowing agent, where the polyol composition contains at least:a) an aromatic amine initiated polyoxyalkylene polyether polyol having an hydroxyl number of 200 meq polyol/g KOH or more;b) an aliphatic amine initiated polyoxyalkylene polyether polyol having an hydroxyl number of 200 meq polyol/g KOH or more;and the blowing agent is at least cyclopentane in an amount of 7 weight percent or more based on the weight of the polyol composition; and further, the cyclopentane blowing agent is soluble in the polyol composition, and the amount of the aliphatic amine initiated polyoxyalkylene polyether polyol is 10 weight percent or less based on the weight of the polyol composition.The polyol composition is adapted to solubilize cyclopentane in the polyol composition without sacrificing, and advantageously improving, the thermal insulation and dimensional stability of the resulting polyurethane foam. It was surprising to discover that less than 10 weight percent of the aliphatic amine initiated polyol was need to accomplish these objectives, and it was further surprising to discover that the aromatic amine initiated polyether polyol improved the thermal insulation of the foam.
