摘要: The present invention accordingly provides a device or apparatus for manipulating matter in a confined or inaccessible space, comprising manipulator means at least partly constructed of one or more bent or twisted elongate shape memory alloy members having pseudoelasticity at the intended manipulation temperature, and a hollow housing (preferably of elongate tubular form) or cannula capable of holding at least the shape memory alloy member(s) in a relatively straightened state, and actuating means for extending the shape memory alloy member(s) from the housing to manipulate matter within the said space and for withdrawing the shape memory alloy member(s) into the housing, the arrangement being such that the shape-memory alloy member(s) bend(s) or twist(s) pseudoelastically in a lateral or helical sense to manipulate the matter on extending from the housing at the said manipulation temperature, and become(s) relatively straightened on withdrawal into the housing at the said temperature.Preferably the invention provides such a device or apparatus which is of elongate form for surgical manipulation of matter within a living body, and which has the manipulator means at its distal end with the shape memory alloy member(s) having pseudoelasticity at the temperature to be encountered within that body, and wherein the actuating means is operable from the proximal end of the device.

摘要: A method for removing a polyp from inside a patient, comprises the steps of inserting an endoscopic insertion member into a patient, ejecting a cauterization loop from the insertion member, and maneuvering the insertion member and the cauterization loop from outside the patient to place the cauterization loop over a polyp inside the patient. A web member is ejected also from the endoscopic insertion member and is opened from a collapsed configuration to a substantially cup shaped opened configuration having a concave inner surface. The endoscope insertion member and the opened web member are maniipulated from outside the patient to juxtapose the concave inner surface of the web with the polyp, whereupon suction is applied to the web member to form a negative pressure zone between the web member and the polyp, thereby attaching the web member to the polyp in a vacuum seal. Then electrical current is conducted to the cauterization loop to sever the polyp from the patient. The web entrains the severed polyp for removal from the patient.

摘要: A procedure for endoscopically removing a polyp utilizes an elongate tubular member having a cup-shaped web member at a distal end portion and an electrically conductive cauterization loop inserted through the tubular member. Upon insertion of an endoscope assembly into a patient, the distal end portion of the tubular member and the cauterization loop are ejected from the distal end of the biopsy channel of the endoscope assembly. Upon a subsequent opening of the cauterization loop, the cauterization loop is placed over a polyp to be removed, the web member is then opened and suction is applied through the tubular member to entrain the polyp to the web member. Electrical current is conducted to the cauterization loop to sever the polyp from the patient, and the loop is closed. The severed polyp is held in the web member by suction and is subsequently removed from the patient.

摘要: In a method for removing a myoma, a distal end portion of a tubular member is inserted through laparoscopic trocar sleeve disposed in the patient's abdomen. The distal end portion of the tubular member is inserted into the myoma tissues to form a core thereof inside the tubular member. The myoma core is fragmented via an energizable laparoscopic instrument and the fragments are aspirated from the tubular coring member. The tubular member may be provided along a distal edge with a cauterizing element for facilitating the insertion of the distal end portion of the tubular member into the myoma.

摘要: A medical instrument including a cautery portion for use in performing an anterior or posterior capsulotomy during extracapsular cataract extraction surgery. A substantially rigid stem portion is connected between the cautery portion and a handle portion, and is provided with bends to facilitate maneuverability of the cautery portion and to avoid substantial interference with the surgical field of vision by the handle portion. An electrical path is defined through the handle portion and stem portion to the cautery portion so as to permit electrical current to be supplied to the cautery portion from an electrical apparatus which generates a radio frequency current. The cautery portion, as supplied with radio frequency current, becomes heated when in contact with an eye lens capsule so as to instantaneously and uniformly sear a peripheral extent of a portion of the lens capsule to be removed during surgery.

摘要: A disposable hand-held portable cautery powered by selfcontained energizers or batteries for energizing an electrode heating tip which is mounted in an insulating tube provided with a removable protective cap or cover encompassing the heating tip and the upper end of the tube, and the tube is further provided with a simple depressible latching or locking switch button on the tube, so that a portion of the button will frictionally overlie the adjacent end portion of the cap assembled thereon to thus prevent energization of the heating tip while the tube and cap are assembled.
