Abstract: A compression staple insertion kit includes first and second elongate handles, each including a handle arm having a proximal end and a distal end, distal from the proximal end. A boss extend is outwardly from the distal end. A central longitudinal axis extends between the arms. The handle arms are pivotally attached to each other at the distal ends at a pivot, which extends along the central longitudinal axis. A slider is slidingly attached to the handle. The slider is movable between a staple securing position at the distal end, wherein proximal ends are biased toward each other and a staple release position toward the proximal end, wherein the proximal ends are biased away from each other. A staple is disposed over the bosses.

Abstract: A device for treating tissue includes a capsule defining a channel extending therethrough and clip arms. Each of the arms includes a proximal part releasably coupled to a distal part, a proximal portion of the distal part configured to be received within the channel of the capsule so that the arms move proximally and distally relative to the capsule between a tissue receiving configuration, in which distal ends of the arms are separated from one another, and a tissue clipping configuration, in which distal ends of the arms are moved toward one another. The proximal portion of each of the arms is configured to release from the corresponding distal part to lock the distal part of each of the arms over a portion of target tissue to be clipped while the proximal parts of the arms are removed from the body.

Abstract: An incision closure apparatus and method for securely and adjustably holding a tube passing through the incision, such as a chest tube. In some embodiments the apparatus comprises a frame having a first side and a second side; a handle assembly pivotably coupled to the frame, the assembly comprising a pair of handles disposed between the first side and second side of the frame, wherein each of the handles is pivotably coupled to the frame and is movable relative to the frame between non-deployed and deployed positions; a needle array positionable at a lower end of each of the handles; and a tube holder located adjacent one of the first side and the second side of the frame for releasably securing the tube. The apparatus is adjustable to alter the placement of the tube and to vary the pressure applied to the tissue at the site of the closed incision by adjusting the spacing between the pair of handles.

Abstract: Articulating surgical instruments are disclosed. In one embodiment, a surgical instrument may include an elongated shaft assembly including an articulable portion moveable between a non-articulated configuration and an articulated configuration. First and second articulating shafts of the elongated shaft assembly may be coaxially arranged and axially fixed at an attachment point located distally from the articulable portion. Proximal portions of the first and second articulating shafts may be displaceable in opposing directions to articulate the articulable portion from the non-articulated configuration to the articulated configuration. In another embodiment, an articulation control may be movable from a first position to a second position to move an articulation lock from a locked configuration to an unlocked configuration to selectively permit articulation of a surgical instrument. The articulation lock also may be movable from the second position to a third position to articulate the surgical instrument.

Abstract: A bone fixation system can be used to stabilize two bone portions intended to be fused together. The system include a bone staple or clip that includes a cross bar and two legs. The system can include a plurality of screws or other additional implant(s) configured to be implanted at an angle to the legs of the bone staple on opposite sides of the interface between two bone portions. The system can improve fixation strength and/or stability of the two bone portions. The fixation system can be used, for example, in small bones such as bones in the foot or hand.

Abstract: To provide a surgical clip capable of being held by, in particular, a robot arm or other device, thus promoting automation of a procedure. A surgical clip to pull an organ or other body tissue so as to provide an area necessary for an operation includes: a pair of upper and lower holders to hold the organ or other body tissue therebetween; a grip to open and close the holders; an urger to constantly urge the holders in a holding direction; and an engagement portion provided on the grip. The engagement portion comes into engagement with a hole defined in a functional part provided on a medical device that includes any one of a robot, forceps, and an applier. The functional part is configured to open and close so as to perform a holding, incising, or other operation.

Abstract: A clip device for gripping biological tissue of a patient includes a clip having a first arm and second arm closeable by operation of a wire that is reciprocally moveable in a longitudinal channel of a sheath; and a bendable member at a distal end region of the sheath. The bendable member can be an integral portion of the sheath or a separate structure. The bendable member is configured to allow a distal end of a clip to rotate or swing toward a proximal end region of the sheath of the device, which orients the clip relative to the sheath to facilitate grasping of tissue even when the approach of the clip is tangential to the tissue, e.g., at an angle (θ) less than 90. The bendable member can be configured to allow a distal end of a clip to rotate or swing toward a proximal end region of a sheath and form an angle of up to at least about 45 degrees, such up to about 60 degrees or up to about 90 degrees, or higher.

Abstract: In one general aspect, various embodiments of the present invention can include a motorized surgical cutting and fastening instrument having a drive shaft, a motor selectively engageable with the drive shaft, and a manual return mechanism configured to operably disengage the motor from the drive shaft and retract the drive shaft. In at least one embodiment, a surgeon, or other operator of the surgical instrument, can utilize the manual return mechanism to retract the drive shaft after it has been advanced, especially when the motor, or a power source supplying the motor, has failed or is otherwise unable to provide a force sufficient to retract the drive shaft.
