A transmitter generates S sub-codes Ci (i=0, 1, 2, . . . , S−1) from a physical layer packet (PLP) information stream using quasi-complementary turbo codes, initially transmits the first sub-code C0, and then sequentially transmits the following sub-codes each time a retransmission request is received for the initial transmission or a previous retransmission. Upon receipt of a retransmission request for the last sub-code CS−1, the transmitter transmits the first sub-code C0 and then sequentially transmits the following sub-codes each time a retransmission request is received.

A method and system for optimizing coding gain that alters the backsearch buffer length and/or the input buffer length of a decoder in response to one or more transmission performance characteristics of the system. The performance characteristics are monitored to determine the performance of the system. The measured transmission performance characteristics are used to control the lengths of the backsearch buffer and the input buffer. The measured transmission performance characteristics along with the backsearch length and/or the input buffer length are analyzed and compared with simulated decoding results. In accordance with the simulated results, the system determines the optimal size of the backsearch buffer and the input buffer needed to achieve a desired performance target. The system adjusts the size of the backsearch buffer length and/or the input buffer length to equal the determined optimal lengths.

In operation, on detection (402) of a data packet the secondary station increases (404) the transmission power of the second channel, thereby enabling the primary station to obtain a better estimate of uplink channel properties and hence increase the accuracy with which it can decode the status signal. The secondary station transmits (406) the status signal, typically either an acknowledgement (ACK) or negative acknowledgement (NACK), and decreases (408) the transmission power of the second control channel signal. The increase and decrease in power are not necessarily identical, for example as a result of the effects of power control.

The reverse link resources may be quickly assigned and de-assigned via short messages exchanged on control channels on the forward and reverse links. In another aspect, mechanisms are provided to facilitate efficient and reliable data transmission. A reliable acknowledgment/negative acknowledgment scheme and an efficient retransmission scheme are provided. Mechanisms are also provided to control the transmit power and/or data rate of the remote terminals to achieve high performance and avoid instability.

A method for determining a data rate of next reverse packet data according to ACK/NACK information and rate control information received from a plurality of base stations in a mobile communication system in which a mobile station, located in a soft-handoff region managed by the base stations, transmits reverse packet data to the base stations, and each of the base stations transmits ACK/NACK information and rate control information, indicating a rate-up, rate-down, or rate-hold command, to the mobile station in response to the reverse packet data. The mobile station receives ACK information from at least one of the base stations, receives either ACK information or NACK information from base stations other than the at least one base station, and receives rate control information from all of the base stations. The mobile station determines a data rate of reverse packet data based on rate control information received from a set of base stations that excludes base stations that transmitted rate control information indicating a rate-hold command together with NACK information.
