Methods are provided for the design of backing dies utilized with front, decorative embossing dies for the simultaneous production and embossing of wood composite panels. The methods apply where more than one decorative pattern is embossed onto the wood composite panels during a single press cycle. The cross-sectional area or volume of the panels impressed with each different decorative pattern forms the basis for the methods of the design. Included are methods of forming wood composite panels using dies made according to the disclosed die design methods.

A novel adhesive web or sheet having a carrier backing and an adhesive layer which can be cut with intricate graphic patterns and peeled to leave a reverse image of the desired graphic, as an adhesive on the carrier backing. The adhesive pattern is then transferred to the display or framing substrate, by the application of relatively low heat and pressure. After transfer, the adhesive pattern is right-reading, and serves as the bonding foundation for the ultimate graphic. A graphic sheet having a decorative upper surface, is placed with its lower surface on the adhesive pattern. Relatively low levels of heat and pressure are applied through the top, or decorative surface, thereby attaching the lower surface of the graphic sheet to the adhesive pattern, but not to the remainder of the framing substrate. After cooling, the graphic sheet is peeled away, leaving behind only that portion which bonded to the adhesive pattern. Thus, the observer sees the desired decorative graphic pattern with a raised surface consisting of a portion of the graphic sheet. Preferably, the carrier backing of the adhesive sheet is a transparent plastic, such as 500-700 gauge polyester film, on which a solution coated layer of adhesive including colorant has been applied. Preferably, the coated adhesive layer is a water-based dispersion of ethylene acrylic acid and urethane.

A method for preparing decorative lacquered Ti-based articles is disclosed, which method comprises the steps of: (a) heating to 900.degree. to 1300.degree. in vacuum a base of titanium or its alloy whose surface serves as a base material, to grow the crystal grains on the surface of the base while simultaneously thermally etching the surface, so as to make the base surface uneven; (b) cooling the base; (c) etching the surface of the base with an etchant to enlarge the unevenness of the surface; (d) anodizing the base; (e) applying an undercoat onto the surface of the base; (f) optionally heating the undercoat to cure the same; and (g) further applying a coating onto the undercoat and then drying it. The method makes it possible to prepare decorative lacquered Ti-based articles having a Raden-, Hyomon- or Heidatsu, Kyushitsu- or Makie-like appearance utilizing titanium or its alloy as a base material.

A patterned metallized film comprises a transparent or translucent polymeric film coated on one side with a thin coating of metal, with the metal coating and the polymeric film being bonded to each other. The metal coating has a multiplicity of fractures of different sizes distributed throughout the coating in a prescribed pattern so that the reflection of light by the fractured metal coating produces a three-dimensional illusion of the pattern when viewed through said polymeric film. The film may also include a layer of adhesive on the opposite side of the metal coating from the polymeric film, and a paper backing sheet on the opposite side of the adhesive layer from the metal coating. The fractures are preferably formed by heating the metallized film non-uniformly so that selected areas of the film expand and soften at a rate different from the rate at which other areas of said film expand and soften. The different rates of expansion and softening produce multiple fractures in the metal coating between the selected areas and the other areas, whereby the fractures replicate the desired pattern.

The apparatus has a base with an upright on which are fastened parallel elements and a screw that is seated in its upper end in a thrust element and at its lower end is linked by an articulation to an electric motor. The screw drives a fork guided on the parallel elements. A slide is fastened to the fork and has longitudinal channels and a plate for inclination at increments of 15.degree.. To this slide is fastened a second electric motor and on its axis is mounted a carrier on which is fastened a mask in which is fixed the article to be decorated. On the rotating bearer a disk can be fastened on which are mounted four spokes with four springs and a repleceable stand.

According to the invention, the surface of a blank to be shaped into a product is decorated by marking on a test blank a plurality of reference points distributed over the entire surface of the test blank which will be affected by the shaping. The test blank is then shaped into a test product and the positions of the reference points are determined. A block of decoration to be obtained on the product is formed, and the positions of the reference points on the test product are located on the block. The decoration is then converted into a plurality of pixels of each inking color, and the position of each pixel with respect to the reference points on the test product is located. A corresponding pixel position with respect to the reference points on the test blank is also determined, and a film is prepared by printing the film with each pixel of the decoration reproduced in a location corresponding to the corresponding location on the test blank. At least one blank is then decorated with the film.

An apparatus for decorating the cylindrical surface of an article, such as a bottle, with a label, which includes a turret for transporting the article and a label from a loading to an unloading location while simultaneously rotating the article around its own axis which facilitates the label to be transferred to the cylindrical surface of the bottle. The turret also includes nozzles which engage each article at the decorating station. Furthermore, air may be blown into the article through the nozzle to support the article in instances when said article is made of a plastic or other deformable material.
