摘要： An apparatus and method is described herein for applying labels to containers. The apparatus includes a guidance mechanism configured to provide a path for receiving a plurality of labels having a back surface with a fluid activatable adhesive that is non-tacky until activated, an adhesive activation station aligned with at least a portion of the guidance mechanism and configured to apply to the back surface of said labels a fluid to activate said adhesive along said back surface of said labels, and a label application station configured to apply at least one of said labels with said activated adhesive onto an exterior surface of a corresponding object located on a rotatable platform. The guidance mechanism includes at least one rotatable transfer member having a plurality of pallets. Each of the pallets includes multiple openings for communication of suction to enable at least one of the pallets to receive and releasably secure a front of the labels onto at least one pallet, and one or more rollers connected to each of the pallets by one or more tunable complaint members. The label application station includes a servo motor configured to drive a linear speed and a rotational direction of the platform.

The method includes the steps of: providing a plurality of containers on a conveyor wherein the containers and the conveyor are moving at a constant velocity VC; receiving a captured container of the plurality of containers between a first belt that is moving at a dynamic velocity VA and a second belt that is moving at a dynamic velocity VB, the first and second belts capturing opposing sides of a captured container while the captured container remains on the conveyor, wherein at the time of capturing the container between the first and second belts, VA, VB and VC are substantially equal to each other; applying a label to the container using the first and second belts by adjusting the velocities VA and VB; adjusting the orientation of the captured container by further adjusting the velocities VA and VB; and releasing the captured container from the first and second belts at the velocity VC on the conveyor, wherein at the time of releasing the container from between the first and second belts, VA, VB and VC are substantially equal to each other.

The applicator system includes a supply for supplying the web with the labels thereon and a take-up for taking up the web after transfer of the label from the web to the item. The supply and take-up are vertically oriented. The applicator includes a movable label applicator head. A rotary table moves the items along a path defined by rotation of the table and rotates the items relative to an axis of the items. The label applicator head is movable toward and away from the item and the item is rotated to apply the label to the item as it moves passed the applicator head.

Each roller 22 has a resilient surface constituted, for example, by a foam rubber sleeve, and is independently resiliently mounted on a common support 24 by means of springs 36. Labels 16 are partially affixed to bottles 4 which are then rotated about their axes as they pass the presser 20. Resilient contact between the rollers 22 and the label 16 cause the label 16 to be pressed against the surface of the bottle 4 to fix it in place.
