    摘要: A method of identifying a gemstone, particularly a diamond by: exciting the gemstone to cause it to emit luminescence radiation according to a luminescence spectrum unique to the respective gemstone, in which the luminescence intensity uniquely varies as a function of wavelength; measuring the level of the luminescence radiation at a plurality of preselected wavelengths of its luminescence spectrum; and utilizing the levels of the luminescence radiation at the preselected wavelenths to identify the respective gemstone and to distinguish it from other gemstones.

    摘要: A simulated diamond such as crystalline cubic zirconia, which has optical properties very similar to natural diamond and so is difficult to distinguish optically from natural diamond, is distinguished from natural diamond by measuring its thermal conductivity which is significantly different from the thermal conductivity of natural diamond, by measuring the temperature of a heated probe held against the simulated diamond as an indication of the simulated diamond thermal conductivity. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a controlled amount of heat energy is generated at the probe and thereafter, while the probe is held against the simulated diamond, the temperature of the probe is detected as a measure of relative thermal conductivity of the simulated diamond to the natural diamond.

    摘要: A technique is described for objectively determining the overall quality of a precious cut stone. A beam of parallel light rays is directed along the optical axis perpendicularly against a main exposed surface of the stone while the stone rotates about the optical axis. The principal reflected rays from the rotating stone are scanned in a spiral path by rotating a light-sensitive detector about a second axis passing through the main surface of the stone perpendicular to the optical axis. Facilities are provided for (1) displaying the logarithm of the intensity of the respective detected rays and (2) counting the number of detected reflected rays whose intensity amplitude exceeds a predetermined threshold.
