This invention discloses an oil soluble polyether composition, comprising: ##STR1## wherein R is either a C.sub.14-20 alkyl or C.sub.9-12 alkylphenyl; A is ##STR2## where x is from 7 to 13; i, j, k, and l are each independently from 0 to 35 and the sum (i+j+k+l) is from 8 to 35;o, p, and q are each independently 0 to 1 and the sum (o+p+q) is from 0 to 3; and,the average mole ratio of the glycidyl ether monomeric unit A to the initiator unit RO is from 0.4:1 to 1.5:1.This invention also discloses an anionic polymerization process for producing an oil soluble polyether composition, comprising reacting a mixture of propylene oxide and a C.sub.8-14 alkyl glycidyl ether with an initiator obtained from the group consisting of a C.sub.14-20 alkanol and a C.sub.9-12 alkylphenol under the influence of an alkaline metal alkoxide catalyst.

Such compounds are useful as hydraulic fluids. R is typically --(CH.sub.2).sub.x -- where x is from 4 to 10. A process for preparing an alkoxylating agent with a diol HOROH in a first step and further reacting the product of the first step with ethylene oxide is also disclosed. A typical diol is 1,6-hexanediol; a typical alkoxylating agent is propylene oxide.

Isotactic poly(glycidyl nitrate) useful in solid propellants is produced by polymerizing chiral (R) glycidyl nitrate or its enantiomer, (S) glycidyl nitrate. Chiral (R) glycidyl nitrate or its enantiomer is prepared by sequential treatment of chiral (S) glycidyl tosylate or its enantiomer with nitric acid and sodium hydroxide. Chiral (S) glycidyl tosylate or its enantiomer, (R) glycidyl tosylate, can be produced by Sharpless epoxidation of allyl alcohol or by direct tosylation or commercially available chiral glycidol. Likewise, chiral (R) glycidyl nitrate or its enantiomer, (S) glycidyl nitrate, can be prepared directly via nitration of (S) or (R) glycidol, respectively.

Hydroxyterminated prepolymers, used in curing reactions with isocyanates to produce elastomers, are prepared by continuously adding over periods of 12-50 hours an oxetane monomer to a reaction mixture containing a diol initiator and a catalyst capable of catalyzing the cationic quasi-living cationic polymerization of the monomer, the rate of addition to maintain stoichiometric excess over the monomer. Polymerization is terminated by adding brine. Polymers of increased molecular weight and reduced impurity levels result.

The peptides modified by the polyethylene glycol derivatives (I) of the invention, as compared with the corresponding non-modified peptides, show decreased antigenicity, are considerably delayed in biological clearance, and exhibit their physiological activities effectively over a long period, rendering them very effective as pharmaceuticals as well as drugs for animals.
