Abstract: An actuator or sensor device comprises an electroactive polymer (EAP) arrangement which extends between fixed opposite ends. The electroactive polymer arrangement comprises a passive carrier layer and an active electroactive polymer layer, wherein at or adjacent the ends, the passive carrier layer and the active EAP layer are mounted with one over the other in a first order, and at a middle area between the ends, the carrier layer and the active EAP layer are mounted in an opposite order. This enables internal stresses and moments within the electroactive polymer arrangement to be used more effectively to contribute to displacement or actuation force.

Abstract: A display backlight comprises an edge-lit lightguide having an array of light out-coupling structures to enable light to escape from the lightguide at the location of the light out-coupling structures. A light source arrangement is used for providing light into the lightguide at one or both of the opposite side edges. The light source arrangement is controllable to provide a selected one of at least first and second light outputs into the lightguide, the two light outputs having a different angle to the general plane of the lightguide and resulting in light which escapes from the lightguide with a different range of exit angles. In this way, a directional backlight output is enabled, based on the way light is coupled into a lightguide. This provides a simple structure only requiring control of the light provided to the lightguide. The backlight may for example enable an auto stereoscopic display to be formed without the need for a lenticular array.

Abstract: An autostereoscopic display comprises a pixelated display panel comprising an array of single color pixels or an array of sub-pixels of different colors and a view forming arrangement comprising an array of lens elements. The pixels form a square (or near square) grid, and the lenses also repeat in a square (or near square) grid. A vector p is defined which relates to a mapping between the pixel grid and the lens grid. Regions in the two dimension space for this vector p are identified which give good or poor banding performance, and the better banding performance regions are selected.

Abstract: A display has an array of light emitting display pixels occupying pixel areas, and a polarizing light transmissive area between the pixel areas. This polarization can be used to improve the contrast ratio of a transparent 2D display. However, it can also be used to enable a transparent 3D display to be formed without distortion of the see-through transparent display function. For this purpose, the light emitting display pixels can emit polarized light orthogonal to the polarization provided by the light transmissive area.

Abstract: A sensor device for measuring levels of one or more stereoisomers in body fluids, for example lactate in sweat. The device includes a body fluid collection means and an optical measurement system. The measurement of the isomer levels is based on measuring an optical property of an incident light which is known to be modified in a reliable and reproducible way by intrinsic optical activity of at least one isomer within the sample. By measuring the optical property, an indication of concentration of at least one stereoisomer can be derived. For example, D- and L-lactate are enantiomers and the optical activity of each has the effect of changing a rotation angle of light polarization. It also has the effect of changing a central frequency of a spectral composition of the incident light. In each case a polarization state modification is applied to the light before or after application to the sample.

Abstract: Provided is an apparatus (100) for transporting sweat droplets (112) to a sensor. The apparatus comprises a chamber (102) for filling with sweat. The chamber has an inlet (104) lying adjacent the surface of the skin (106), which inlet permits sweat to enter and fill the chamber. The chamber has an outlet (114) from which a sweat droplet protrudes once the chamber has been filled. The apparatus further comprises a fluid transport assembly which is designed to enable the sweat droplet protruding from the outlet to become detached from the outlet of the chamber. The sweat droplet is subsequently transported by the fluid transport assembly to the sensor. Once the protruding droplet has been released from the outlet, the outlet is made available for a subsequent sweat droplet to protrude therefrom upon further filling of the chamber. The released sweat droplet is transported via the fluid transport assembly at least as fast as the subsequent sweat droplet protrudes from the outlet such that the respective sweat droplets do not contact each other before reaching the sensor. Thus, the apparatus supplies sweat to the sensor in a dropwise manner. Further provided is a system comprising the apparatus and a sensor, and a method for transporting sweat droplets to a sensor.
