A breathable, decorative wallcovering having a smooth, continuous, aesthetically appealing exposed surface which can be printed with a design or pattern having sharply defined edges, and having a relatively high moisture permeability, includes a porous polymeric ply fused to and supported by a nonwoven substrate ply which consists of an array of hydroentangled fibers. The porous polymeric ply is formed by thermally fusing a plastisol coating, which is applied to the nonwoven substrate ply, and which has a thickness sufficiently low to permit localized variations in fiber orientation and small variations in the thickness of the nonwoven substrate ply to cause the formation of a multiplicity of miniature discontinuities which are substantially invisible to the unaided eye and which are randomly distributed throughout the coating. The plastisol coating is, however, thick enough to allow the formation of a coating which upon thermal fusion provides a polymeric ply having a smooth continuous appearance. Upon heating the plastisol coating to a temperature which is sufficient to cause fusion of resins contained therein, a highly permeable polymeric ply having the appearance of a smooth, continuous film is formed. The wallcovering is particularly useful where a smooth surface is desired for aesthetic reason and where high moisture permeability is also desired.

The present invention relates to a method of preparing a woven textile surface covering. The method involves applying a resin composition layer onto a back surface of a woven layer. The woven layer is formed by weaving warp and weft yarns. The resin composition layer is effective for bonding to the warp and weft yarns. The resin composition layer is provided with a resin composition and a cross-linking agent effective to wet, penetrate, and encapsulate the warp and weft yarns. The resin composition layer occupies the interstices of the warp and weft yarns and when the resin is heated, the resin cross-links with the woven layer. A backing layer is then contacted with the surface of the heated resin composition layer thereby bonding the backing layer to the resin composition layer. The present invention also relates to a woven textile surface covering having a first layer with a decorative surface and a back surface. The first layer is formed from woven warp and weft yarns that have interstices therebetween. The woven textile surface covering has a second layer that has a yarn engaging surface where at least a portion of the yarn engaging surface occupies the interstices of the warp and weft yarns. The second layer includes a resin composition and a cross-linking agent. The cross-linking agent is effective for cross-linking the resin composition with the warp and weft yarns. The resin composition and the cross-linking agent are effective for wetting, penetrating, and encapsulating at least a portion of the warp and weft yarns.

By the use of improved decorative sheets each comprising (a) a hydrophilic deformative sheet which is susceptible to expansion deformation by swelling caused by water absorption and (b) a moisture penetration controlling layer formed on the entire surface of at least one side of the hydrophilic deformative sheet, each decorative sheet being designed to differ, depending upon regions of the sheet, in the degree of expansion deformation caused by water absorption, decorative articles each having a deep and clear surface unevenness or relief pattern can be obtained on hardened water-containing plastic materials. These decorative articles are applicable to various uses such as architectural materials (interior and exterior materials for walls, ceilings, etc.), decoration boards and panels, materials for sign boards and materials for packaging.

The method includes preparing a multi-layer decoration complex having at least a substrate layer, a coloured layer, and a heat-fusible layer, cutting the coloured and heat-fusible layers along outlines of the decorative patterns without cutting the substrate layer; removing portions of the coloured and heat-fusible layers outside the pattern areas; arranging the prepared multi-layer complex on the upper coating layer by way of the surface thereof with the heat-fusible layer; applying temperature and pressure conditions that trigger the adhesion of the heat-fusible layer to the upper coating layer; and then subjecting the assembly to a processing resulting in a structured and regular surface condition of the upper coating layer.
