The catalyst comprises an activator and an organometallic compound that includes a Group 3 to 10 transition or lanthanide metal, M, and a multidentate ligand characterized by an indolyl group that is covalently linked to an amido group, wherein the indolyl group is &pgr;-bonded to M and the amido group is &sgr;-bonded to M. The indolyl-amido ligand is formed from readily available organic compounds and allows easy synthesis of a constrained geometry catalyst system.

This invention relates to a catalyst system comprising a substituted, bridged bisindenyl metallocene supported on a polymeric support wherein the metallocene is activated for polymerization by an ionizing reaction and stabilized in cationic form with a noncoordinating anion. A protonated ammonium salt of a noncoordinating amine is covalently bonded to the support. Propylene polymers produced by these supported catalyst systems have melting points and polymer microstructures similar to propylene polymers produced using analogous unsupported catalyst systems.

The present invention is directed to a polymerization catalyst which comprises (A) a transition metal compound represented by the general formula (I)L.sub.d MX.sub.e Y.sub.f Z.sub.g (I)[wherein the respective symbols are as defined in the specification], (B) a compound capable of forming an ionic complex from the transition metal compound of the component (A) or its derivative and, if necessary, (C) an organic aluminum compound; and a process for preparing homopolymerizing or copolymerizing monomers in the presence of the above-mentioned polymerization catalyst. The polymerization catalyst of the present invention has a high activity at 70 to 200.degree. C. which is efficient in an industrial process or at a higher temperature and permits the formation of a (co)polymer which has a high molecular weight and a uniform composition and which can control a molecular weight distribution.

The invention is directed to a catalyst composition suitable for addition reactions of ethylenically and acetylenically unsaturated monomers comprising a metal oxide support having covalently bound to the surface thereof directly through the oxygen atom of the metal oxide an activator anion that is also ionically bound to a catalytically active transition metal cation compound. The invention includes a preparation process for the invention catalyst composition exemplified by reacting a Lewis acid, such as trisperfluorophenyl boron with residual silanol groups of a silica support, preferably then reacting with a Lewis base such as diethylaniline, so as to prepare a silica bound anionic activator that when combined with a suitable transition metal compound will protonate it so as to form the ionic catalyst system. Use of the invention catalyst to polymerize alpha-olefins is exemplified.
