An embodiment provides a method for determining the alkalinity of an aqueous sample using an alkalinity sensor, including: monitoring the pH of an aqueous sample using a pH sensor in a sample cell, the pH sensor including a pH sensor electrode made of boron-doped diamond; generating hydronium ions, using a hydronium generator, in the aqueous sample in the sample cell, the hydronium generator including a hydronium-generating electrode; changing the pH of the aqueous sample by causing the hydronium generator to generate an amount of hydronium ions in the aqueous sample; quantifying and converting a current or charge to the number of hydronium ions produced to an end point of the electrochemical titration, the end point correlating to the alkalinity of a sample; and analyzing the alkalinity of the aqueous sample based on the generated amount of hydronium ions and the resulting change in pH monitored by the pH sensor.

A method of measuring a quantity of moisture in an electrode includes at least three steps as follows: disposing an electrode, which is a measurement target sample, inside a container provided with a gas introduction pipe and a gas discharge pipe; heating the electrode by supplying inert gas heated to a predetermined temperature in advance to the inside of the container through the gas introduction pipe, and vaporizing moisture adsorbed to the electrode; and collecting the moisture vaporized from the electrode, together with the inert gas through the gas discharge pipe and determining the quantity of the collected moisture. In addition, a moisture quantity measuring apparatus includes a container that has a gas introduction pipe and a gas discharge pipe, a heating unit, and a moisture quantity measuring unit that collects moisture vaporized from a sample, through the gas discharge pipe and determines the quantity of collected moisture.

Fluidic systems and methods for analysis are provided. In some embodiments, systems and methods for improved measurement of absorbance/transmission through fluidic systems are described. Specifically, in one set of embodiments, optical elements are fabricated on one side of a transparent fluidic device opposite a series of fluidic channels. The optical elements may guide incident light passing through the device such that most of the light is dispersed away from specific areas of the device, such as intervening portions between the fluidic channels. By decreasing the amount of light incident upon these intervening portions, the amount of noise in the detection signal can be decreased when using certain optical detection systems.

An apparatus and method for measuring the isoelectric pH for materials deposited on or otherwise affixed onto and in contact with an electrode surface, and a method for utilizing the isoelectric pH to form nanometer thickness, self-assembled layers on the material, are described. Forming such layers utilizing information obtained about the isoelectric pH values of the substrate and the coating is advantageous since the growth of the coating is self-limiting because once the surface charge has been neutralized there is no longer a driving force for the solid electrolyte coating thickness to increase, and uniform coatings without pinhole defects will be produced because a local driving force for assembly will exist if any bare electrode material is exposed to the solution. The present self-assembly procedure, when combined with electrodeposition, may be used to increase the coating thickness. Self-assembly, with or without additional electrodeposition, allows intimate contact between the anode, electrolyte and cathode which is required for successful application to solid-state batteries, as an example.

The tracer can be inert or can participate as an indicator of the titrant-analyte reaction. The tracer concentration is quantified by an appropriate method depending upon the type of tracer and analytical performance desired (e.g. precision, accuracy). The method simplifies titrations because it eliminates the need for a precision dispensing device and analytical balance.

Then, an underwater vehicle (UV) is deployed into a body of water and directed to the target location. The invention describes a method of ozone titration sensing which utilizes an ozone addition to a target solution, detection of ozone using an Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP) electrode or an Ultraviolet (UV) absorption photodiode or other means to detect ozone and the determination of the relative concentration of organics or pathogens subject to ozone oxidation which are present in the target solution. The inventive sensing method can be usefully employed to determine the relative concentration of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and/or parasites that are readily oxidizable by ozone in aqueous solutions. The inventive sensing method may be used to control an ozone (or other oxidizing or disinfecting) compound dispensing system to optimize the dosage of ozone (or other disinfecting compound) necessary to produce a desired kill ratio or to generate a desired residual of ozone concentration in an aqueous solution after pathogen disinfection.

The present invention provides a potentiometric titration method of calculating a content of each acid in a mixed acid solution. The potentiometric titration method includes steps as follows. Step 1, an alkali-alcohol solution of a concentration in 0.1˜0.2 mol/L is prepared and titrated with a basis reagent. Step 2, a first solvent and a second solvent are added into and stirred with a mixed acid solution consisted of nitric acid, phosphoric acid and acetic acid to form a mixed system, and the mixed system is titrated with the alkali-alcohol solution to obtain three equivalence points of the nitric acid, phosphoric acid and acetic acid in the mixed system. Step 3, a concentration of each acid in the mixed system is measured with the three equivalence points obtained in Step 2. According to the present invention, the content of each acid in the mixed acid solution can be rapidly and precisely measured.
