A method and compositions for wound care management comprising a dressing comprising a three-dimensional body of glass-based fibers comprising 40 to 80 weight % B2O3, wherein at least 25 wt. % of the fibers have a diameter between 200 nm and 4000 nm, and a length:width aspect ratio of at least 10. The glasses may also be used for wound care as fibers formed into sutures, as particles in surgical glue to close a wound, or as particles in an ointment or cream to apply to a wound. The compositions may comprise glass formers P2O5 and/or SiO2; alkali oxides selected from Li2O, Na2O, K2O, and Rb2O; and/or alkaline earth oxides selected from MgO, SrO, BaO and CaO. The compositions may further comprise 0.05 to 10 wt. % of one or more trace elements selected from Ag, Cu, F, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Sr, and Zn.

The silicon present can be biocompatible, bioactive or resorbable material and may also be able to act as an electrical conductor. In addition, porous silicon may be used as a slow release means for example for drugs or fragrances, or as a collector for example for sweat. Novel fibres, fabrics and methods of preparation of these are also described and claimed.

This invention is a fused loop (10) of an elongated material such as a surgical suture, and apparatus for making the loop. Portions of one or more segments (12) to be joined together are fused in a welding process to form a welded joint (14). The shear area of the fused portion (20) of the joint (14) determines the strength of the joint (14), and is thus preferably relatively large. Various configurations for the welding apparatus facilitate the creation of relatively large fused portions (20) of the joint (14) by maximizing contact between at least one of the welding members of the apparatus, and at least one of the segments (12) to be joined.

Novel polymers are provided which are produced by recombinant techniques. The polymers are characterized by having a small repeating sequence which provides for strands capable of associating, resulting in useful structural characteristics, where the strands are joined by turns or loops which are flexible and available for interaction with the environment. Specifically, repeating groups of naturally occurring proteins such as silk are modified by introduction of an amino-acid sequence at a site which provides for a turn between strands to provide for readily available oligopeptides capable of interacting with molecules in the environment.

An apparatus for cutting at least one end of a surgical suture is described. The apparatus comprises a first pair of feed rollers which advance the surgical suture through a hole (or opening) in a cutting assembly. The first pair of feed rollers is driven by a stepper motor. A second pair of friction rollers take up the slack (i.e., provide tension) to the surgical suture beyond the cutting assembly. The second pair of friction rollers is driven by an electric or stepper motor. The cutting assembly comprises an anvil plate in which the hole is positioned, and a razor blade which is placed in a movable bracket against the anvil plate. The cutting edge of the razor blade is driven by a spring across the hole and cuts the surgical suture. The spring is activated (and can be reactivated for repetitive steps) by an electric motor.

A method of repairing a natural elastic system in a human or animal body, which comprises replacing a damaged portion of the system with a shaped artificial elastomeric copolymer comprising an elastomeric component selected from the group consisting of tetrapeptide and pentapeptide repeating units or mixtures thereof wherein the repeating units comprise amino acid residues selected from the group consisting of hydrophobic amino acid and glycine residues and the repeating units exist in a conformation having a .beta.-turn and a crosslinking component selected from the group consisting of amino acid and peptide residues of the formula ##STR1## wherein .alpha. represents a covalent bond or a peptide fragment containing 1-10 .alpha.-helix-forming amino acid residues, B represents a covalent bond or a petide fragment containing 1-10 amino acid residues, and n is an integer from 2 to 6; wherein the copolymer optionally comprises a chemotactic component selected from the group consisting of -Ala-Pro-Gly-Val-Gly-Val-, -Pro-Gly-Val-Gly-Val-Ala-, -Gly-Val-Gly-Val-Ala-Pro-, -Val-Gly-Val-Ala-Pro-Gly-, -Gly-Val-Ala-Pro-Gly-Val-, and -Val-Ala-Pro-Gly-Val-Gly- and is essentially devoid of peptide fragments which occur in natural elastin other than these elastomeric, crosslinking, and chemotactic components, is disclosed along with elastomeric copolymers suitable for use in the method of the invention and methods of synthesizing such bioelastomers.
