Abstract:
A surgical sponge is provided, having a radiofrequency (RF) tag positioned interior thereto. The RF tag has a base layer with at least one tab projecting from an outer perimeter of thereof. The RF tag has a first protective layer with at least one tab projecting from the outer perimeter of the RF tag and generally aligned with the at least one tab of the base layer and an RF identifier laminated between the base layer and the first protective layer. The RF identifier has an antenna, and an electrically responsive member. The antenna can be a metal foil loop antenna etched on to the base layer. The RF identifier can include additional metal foil provided on the base layer when the metal foil loop antenna is etched on to the base layer, the additional metal foil configured to enhance x-ray opacity of the sponge.
Abstract:
System, methods and apparatus related to surgical articles used during surgery. The system, methods and apparatus may include features such as an element/substrate added to surgical articles which enables the recognition by human visualization of the surgical articles when left inside patient bodies when viewed with medical imaging technologies. The element/substrate may include a plurality of three dimensional objects. Alternatively, the element/substrate may comprise a ribbon of radiopaque material having cut-puts or other radiolucent regions which provide image artifacts observable under fluoroscopic imaging.
Abstract:
A system and method for performing a package status check are provided, including a scanner for use in a surgical field and having an antenna for emitting a radio frequency detection field, the scanner including control circuitry configured to determine a predetermined quantity of sponges corresponding to a complete pack of sponges; count a number of sponges associated with the pack with the scanner prior to use of the sponges in a surgical field; and issue an alert when a number of counted sponges does not match the predetermined quantity corresponding to the complete pack. The system and method may include the control circuitry configured to determine whether a sponge has been re-scanned or is unknown by comparing detected information with previously detected information prior.
Abstract:
An improved surgical sponge having a contrast agent, such as bismuth beads, secured to the sponge material in a unique pattern of a type not found in nature or in human anatomy. The unique pattern is preferably spaced dots or circles having various sizes and spacing, potentially arranged in a matrix of rows and columns. The desired unique pattern is arranged such that the dots or other non-natural shapes are large enough to remain visible, while small enough to avoid adversely affecting the pliability and absorption of the sponge.
Abstract:
Systems and methods make medical items more visible during a medical procedure. An example medical item includes an absorbent material adapted to absorb fluid during a medical procedure, the absorbent material having an outer surface that reflects one or more first wavelengths of light to provide the absorbent material with one or more first colors. The medical item may include one or more enhancing materials disposed on at least one portion of the outer surface of the absorbent material, the one or more enhancing materials reflecting or emitting one or more second wavelengths to provide the enhancing materials with one or more second colors. Alternatively, an enhancing device is coupled to the absorbent material, the enhancing device reflecting or emitting one or more second wavelengths, the one or more second wavelengths being different from the one or more first wavelengths of the absorbent material.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a surgical sponge which includes multiple plies of gauze and stitches. The multiple plies of gauze has one or more open sides. The stitches are adapted to fasten or close the open sides. The stitches are made with one or more contrasting threads.
Abstract:
An X-ray detectable adhesive bandage includes: an adhesive protective member further including a substrate and an adhesive layer; and an absorbent member formed by layering, in order from bottom to top, at a prescribed site upon the adhesive protective member, a metallic foil further including a hot melt bonding agent layer, a long object which is formed by an X-ray detectable material being covered either in whole or in part by a covering object, and an absorbent pad. The absorbent member is configured from a prescribed metallic foil, a prescribed long object, and an absorbent pad such as a heat bonding layered body.
Abstract:
Apparatus and methods for identifying and counting objects having identifiers entering and exiting a surgical field are provided. In one embodiment, the apparatus has an entry scanner, a hand held scanner and an exit scanner for generating a detection field and for receiving data which identifies said objects. In another embodiment, the apparatus has a plurality of lower antennas and an upper antenna for generating a detection field and for receiving data which identifies said objects. Various surgical devices with identifiers and methods for preventing electromagnetic coupling between and protecting objects and identifier are also provided. The invention further provides apparatus and methods comprising a handheld scanner and a mat adapted to underlie a patient during a surgical procedure.
Abstract:
The present disclosure relates to a medical material or surgical sponge including an integral construction having a plurality of micro-particle taggants that are UV or radio wave detectable. The sponge includes a fibrous, nonwoven fabric containing entangled fibers arranged in an interconnecting patterned relationship in a plane of the fabric, and at least one UV or radio wave detectable element positioned interiorly of the fibrous nonwoven fabric in the plane. The fibers of the nonwoven fabric may be inter twined about the micro-particle taggants.
Abstract:
Embodiments herein comprise a hemostatic composition comprising a plurality of liquid expandable articles capable of expanding upon contact with a liquid. A suitable composition comprises a plurality of liquid-expandable articles that may be mechanically uncoupled from one another and therefore may be capable of moving independently from one another. The plurality of liquid-expandable articles may comprise a compressed material capable of a high-degree of expansion upon liquid contact.
