A silver halide light sensitive photographic material is disclosed, comprising a support having thereon hydrophilic colloid layers including a silver halide emulsion layer, wherein (i) at least 50% of the total projected area of silver halide grains contained in the emulsion layer is accounted for by tabular grains having an aspect ratio of 3 to 15, (ii) the tabular grains each comprising an inner region which accounts for 70% by volume of the grain and a residual outer region, the outer region containing at least 75% of total iodide contained in the grain, and (iii) the tabular grains each having an outermost layer, a halide content distribution among the tabular grains with respect to the outermost layer being not more than 20%; and wherein at least one of the hydrophilic colloid layers contains a sulfur containing compound, which has a water-solubilizing group.

The material exhibits ultrahigh contrast and low fog and is minimized in the variation of photographic characteristics with heat development conditions.

A transfer material colored to a predetermined color is used when images are formed on a transfer material for use in thermal transfer comprising a substrate and a dye receiving layer by a thermal transfer process.When images are formed by an optional image forming method such as silver salt photographic process, ink jet process or thermal transfer process, a transfer material having sepia tone is used in each of the image forming processes thereby forming sepia tone images. Images having unique appearance can be formed easily upon forming images by a thermal transfer process. Images of sepia tone can be formed safely and conveniently.

A radiation-sensitive high chloride emulsion is disclosed comprised of grains predominantly bounded by {100} crystal faces and internally containing three dopants each selected to satisfy a different one of the following class requirements: (i) a metal coordination complex containing a nitrosyl or thionitrosyl ligand in combination with a transition metal chosen from groups 5 to 10 inclusive of the periodic table of elements, (ii) a shallow electron trapping dopant, and (iii) an iridium coordination complex having ligands each of which are more electropositive than a cyano ligand. A gelatino-peptizer for the grains is employed that contains less than 30 micromoles of methionine per gram. The dopants and peptizer in combination increase contrast and provide a highly unexpected increase in high density contrast.

Certain squaric acid derivatives are useful for the thermochemical generation of acid. The squaric acid derivatives may be used in imaging media in conjunction with acid-sensitive materials which undergo a color change when contacted by the acid generated from the squaric acid derivatives. Preferably, the acid-sensitive materials undergo an irreversible color change, so that the image can be fixed by neutralizing all the acid generated with excess base, thereby preventing further color change in the image during long term storage.
