Abstract: A dual core exhaust gas recirculation cooler includes a cooler housing having an EGR inlet, first and second EGR outlets, a cooling circuit extending from a coolant inlet through the cooler housing to a coolant outlet, a first EGR circuit core extending from the EGR inlet to the first EGR outlet, and a second EGR circuit core extending to the second EGR outlet from the EGR inlet or the first EGR outlet. A first EGR valve is configured to selectively couple the first EGR circuit core to a return passageway. A second EGR valve is configured to selectively couple the second EGR circuit core to the return passageway. The EGR valves are configured to selectively flow exhaust gas through the cooler housing within either the first EGR circuit core only or within both the first EGR circuit core and the second EGR circuit core.

Abstract: A method for cleaning an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve includes scheduling a cleaning for the EGR valve, and receiving a signal indicative of a temperature of exhaust gas produced with an internal combustion engine. The method may also include generating a command to actuate an intake throttle valve to a restrictive position to increase the temperature of the exhaust gas for cleaning the EGR valve, and generating a signal to repeatedly actuate the EGR valve.

Abstract: A control device for an internal combustion engine includes an internal combustion engine and a valve opening-closing timing control device. The valve opening-closing timing control device has a phase adjustment mechanism for setting a relative rotation phase of a driving-side rotator and a driven-side rotator. The phase adjustment mechanism overlaps a timing of opening an intake valve with a timing of opening an exhaust valve, by setting, in a predetermined period, the relative rotation phase such that the exhaust valve closes after a top dead center position has been reached, and a bypass passage is provided that connects an exhaust passage of one cylinder that is in an exhaust process to the exhaust passage of another cylinder that is in an intake process at the same time as the exhaust process.

Abstract: A fresh air and exhaust gas control method for an engine includes monitoring parameters of an engine in an operational state using a plurality of sensors and generating engine state estimates using an engine observer model. The engine observer model represents an intake manifold volume, an exhaust manifold volume, and a charge air cooler volume. The method also includes generating a turbocharger rotational speed estimate using a turbocharger model and calculating a fresh air flow correction factor. The method further includes determining a desired air throttle position and a desired EGR valve position based on setpoint commands, the monitored engine parameters, the fresh air flow correction factor, the engine state estimates, and the turbocharger rotational speed estimate. The method additionally includes adjusting the air throttle based on the desired air throttle position and adjusting the EGR valve based on the desired EGR valve position.

As one example, the engine operating condition may include an engine temperature or a temperature of a catalyst disposed in the exhaust passage.

In one example, an amount of opening overlap between a plurality of intake valves and a first set of exhaust valves coupled to the first exhaust manifold may be adjusted responsive to a transition from an estimated combustion air-fuel content to a leaner air-fuel content of the blowthrough air on a cylinder to cylinder basis. As one example, the transition may be determined from an output of an oxygen sensor positioned within the first exhaust manifold or an exhaust runner of each of the first set of exhaust valves.

In one example, an intake valve timing, exhaust valve timing of a first set of exhaust valves coupled to the first exhaust manifold, and a position of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve in an EGR passage may be adjusted in coordination with one another in response to a condition at a compressor. The EGR passage may be coupled between the intake passage, upstream of the compressor, and the first exhaust manifold.
