Abstract: A control system for an engine of a vehicle includes one or more oxygen (O2) sensors disposed proximate to a three-way catalytic converter (TWC) in an exhaust system of the vehicle, the one or more O2 sensors each being configured to measure an O2 level of exhaust gas produced by the engine, and a controller in signal communication with the one or more O2 sensors. The controller is programmed to detect a fuel shut-off (FSO) event where the engine ceases providing fuel to the engine, determine an accumulated gas flow through the TWC during the FSO event, determine the FSO event has ended, and initiate a fuel enrichment event for a predetermined duration where the engine is supplied with a fuel enrichment level having a rich fuel/air ratio. The fuel enrichment level and the predetermined duration are chosen to reduce non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) emissions while maintaining NOx emission control.

Abstract: A control method for a self-driving vehicle provided with an engine as a driving source, comprising: determining whether or not coast stop is executed in accordance with required driving force of the vehicle, the coast stop being for automatically stopping the engine during the vehicle traveling at speed not more than predetermined vehicle speed; setting the required driving force so that an intervehicular distance between the host vehicle and a preceding vehicle becomes closer to a predetermined distance under presence of the preceding vehicle in front of the host vehicle; predicting a behavior of the preceding vehicle from a situation in front of the preceding vehicle under presence of the preceding vehicle; and prohibiting release of the coast stop for the engine during an automatic stop when future deceleration of the preceding vehicle is predicted in response to an expansion of the intervehicular distance.

Abstract: A predictive driver intention to stop (DITS) system for a vehicle having an engine includes one or more sensors configured to measure a set of operating parameters of the vehicle including at least (i) vehicle speed and (ii) vehicle deceleration rate. A controller is configured to identify no-stop braking events and complete stop braking events, and reference a generated baseline probability table indicating a probability of a driver braking to bring the vehicle to a stop, based on at least the vehicle speed and vehicle deceleration rate measured during at least one of the identified no-stop braking events and complete stop braking events. The controller is further configured to predict a DITS event based on the generated baseline probability table, and control operation of the engine based on the predicted DITS event to facilitate reducing vehicle fuel consumption and/or tailpipe emissions.
