A non-aqueous composition for chemical treatment of the surface of a metallic substrate which comprises a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent, chromic anhydride, phosphoric acid, a solubilizer and a stabilizer. By the use of such non-aqueous composition, chemical treatment can be achieved quickly with remarkable saving of operation steps. The coating resulting from such chemical treatment has a high corrosion resistance and an excellent adhesion with a paint coating film formed thereon.

The invention relates to processes for coating metal surfaces and to corrosion resistant coating compositions for use in the processes. The compositions of the invention are solutions of a chromic acid salt of one or more organic bases having at least one straight or branched chain containing at least six carbon atoms in an organic solvent having a boiling point not greater than 250* C. at atmospheric pressure. The salts used are restricted to those which are sufficiently soluble in the solvent at 20* C. to provide a solution containing at least 0.2% CrO3 w/v in the solution. Preferred bases are primary, secondary or tertiary amines and quaternary ammonium bases. In a preferred embodiment the composition also contains a material capable of effecting reduction of at least a part of the hexavalent chromium in the composition. For particular applications in which the composition is applied to metals which have been pretreated, washed and not dried the composition also contains a surfactant and, if necessary, a solubilizing agent for the surfactant.

To provide a surface treatment solution and treatment method for gold or gold alloy plating that effectively suppresses corrosion of underlying metal or substrate metal from pinholes that develop on the gold or gold alloy plating film.[Solution] A surface treatment solution containing a disulfide compound is brought into contact with a gold or gold alloy plating film. A compound represented by the following formula (2) is preferred as the disulfide compound. X1O3S—R3—S—S—R4—SO3X2 (2) in the formula, R3 and R4 independently represent a linear or branched alkylene group having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, cyclic alkylene group having from 3 to 10 carbon atoms, or phenylene group, R3 and R4 independently may be substituted by one or more substituents selected from an alkyl group, halogen atom, hydroxyl group, or alkoxy group, and X1 and X2 represent monovalent cations.
