Abstract: A process for winding a filament around a winding support. The winding support has a cylindrical shape with dome-shaped longitudinal ends and a roll axis, and is held by a holding device fixed to a base. The process includes the following, occurring in synchronization, feeding a filament, by means of at least one feeding device, towards the winding support, rotating the winding support with respect to the base around a pitch axis of the winding support, rotating unlimitedly the at least one feeding device around a yaw axis of the winding support with respect to the base, and/or rotating unlimitedly the winding support around the yaw axis of the winding support with respect to the base, and rotating unlimitedly the winding support with respect to the base around the roll axis of the winding support.

Abstract: A tool for forming a composite structure may include two or more segments formed from a polymer material. The tool may further include a crush insert disposed between the two or more segments. The tool may also include a support shaft coupled between the two or more segments. A method of forming a mandrel may include forming segments of the mandrel through an additive manufacturing process. The method may further include assembling the segments relative to one another. The method may also include positioning a crush insert between each of the segments. A method of fabricating a composite structure is also disclosed.

Abstract: A polar end ring mechanism for use with composite pressure vessels. The end ring is designed to support a pressure vessel during its formation via filament winding. The end ring helps define an opening at one of the polar ends of a tank. Spikes positioned along a portion of the end ring help prevent rotation or translation of the tank during formation and provide an improved mechanical lock with the tank body. A cap may then be secured to the polar end ring after formation in order to close the pressure vessel.

Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed for encasing various structures with a seamless continuous sleeve, where the presence of existing supports does not allow slipping a sleeve over the structure. In these methods strips of fabrics smeared with or saturated by resin are helically or non-helically wrapped or placed around desired shape mandrels that are located around a support of the structure. As the resin is partially cured, a portion of the sleeve segment is moved away from the mandrel, leaving the rest of the sleeve on the mandrel to be attached to the next will-be-fabricated sleeve segment. The process will continue as many times as needed to create a sleeve of a desired length. In various embodiments the strength of the sleeves varies at different locations. In some embodiments the gaps between the sleeves and the structures are filled with gas, liquid, solid, or any other materials.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a high-pressure tank including a liner that stores gas and a reinforcing layer made of a fiber-reinforced resin and covering an outer surface of the liner includes: a first step of forming a cylinder member made of the fiber-reinforced resin; a second step of forming two dome members made of the fiber-reinforced resin; and a third step of forming a reinforcing body that is the reinforcing layer by joining both end portions of the cylinder member and end portions of the two dome members, respectively. The first step includes forming the cylinder member by winding a release material around a mandrel and winding the fiber-reinforced resin on the release material.
