Holes are formed through the drum in a spiral pattern around the drum. A wire is engaged in each hole, the wire having opposing ends and three bends. One end of the wire is inside the drum with an adjacent portion lying circumferentially on an inner surface of the drum. A portion of the wire outside the drum is aligned in an opposite circumferential direction as the portion of the wire inside the drum. A retaining cylinder sandwiches the end inside the drum between itself and an inside surface of the drum, holding the wire stable. The end of the wire inside the drum is in close proximity to ends of adjacent wires, which inhibits rotation of a wire in its hole in the drum.

In one embodiment, a support member on an abrasive wheel has (a) an annular surface which fixedly supports (as by epoxy) a plurality of flaps in a partially overlapping relationship between successive flaps and (b) a central hole for receiving a mandrel which rotates the wheel. Each flap has on one of its surfaces abrasive particles facing outwardly from the annular surface. Each flap defines an acute angle with the annular surface and preferably extends at its opposite axial ends beyond the axial positions of support by such support surface to obtain a fixed positioning of the flaps relative to the support surface even at the axial positions beyond the axial ends of such annular surface. In a second embodiment, the flaps are disposed on the annular support surface in a tighter relationship than in the first embodiment so that each flap contacts adjacent flaps along a portion of its length. When the wheel is rotated with the flaps disposed adjacent a workpiece, the inner portions of the flaps provide an abrading action, partly because of their contact with one another, and the outer portions of the flaps provide a polishing action, partly because of their separation from one another. This polishing action is facilitated by the fact that (a) the flaps become separated from one another at their outer ends because of centrifugal action and (b) the grit on the flaps becomes progressively worn with progressive positions toward the outer ends of the flaps.

The device is a small hand held sharpening device which provides rigidity and stability of the sharpening edge during use. The sharpening device employs a notched plate which interacts with the housing material surrounding the plate to resist the forces, present during use, which tend to urge the sharpening edge to move. By utilizing this design, the amount of material required for the housing material which surrounds the plate is minimized. Minimal housing allows the sharpening device to be particularly maneuverable in small areas. Minimal housing material, as well as ergonomic design, also allow for ease of use of the sharpening device.

A fastener for use with a rotary peening flap to secure at least two overlapping strap portions together. The fastener includes a shaft for extending through apertures in the overlapping strap portions, a head adjoining one end of the shaft, and an elastic washer at the other end of the shaft. The head of the fastener forms an included edge angle of greater than approximately 90.degree. at the intersection of the bottom and side surfaces of the head. The fastener maintains the overlapping portions of the strap under compression to prevent peening debris form becoming lodged between the fastener and the strap and between the overlapping portions of the strap and to prevent slippage between the strap and the fastener and between the strap portions. The elastic washer has sufficient elasticity to maintain compression as the strap portions become substantially thinner over prolonged use. A peening flap incorporating the fastener is also disclosed, as is a hub assembly incorporating the peening flap and fastener.

An extruded plastic strip contains abrasive grains or minerals embedded homogeneously therein throughout is scored along the machine or extrusion axis direction, such scoring including elliptical or pointed perforations with the long axis or generally pointed ends aligned with the scoring and parallel to the machine or extrusion axis. The preferred plastic material is a 612 nylon, although other plastics may be employed. The material is heat workable, yet relatively stiff and can be used to form a wide variety of power driven abrasive tools. The present application also disclosed a rotary wheel type tool utilizing the perforated strip, and a method of making that tool using a gel type cyanoacrylate as an adhesive. With the strip of the present invention, rotary wheel tools as well as many other tools can economically be produced. In tool use, the strip fractures along the scoring and perforations to provide a tool having closely packed individual rectangular fingers, each with a major flat side facing the direction of rotation.
