A novel ignition resistant or fire blocking composite is disclosed comprising a multiplicity of biregional fibers with a thermoplastic or thermoset polymer, wherein each said biregional fiber comprises an inner region of a thermoplastic polymeric core and an outer region of a carbonaceous sheath, and wherein said biregional fibers are present in the composite in an amount of from 10 to 95% by weight, based on the total weight of the composite. In one embodiment, the multiplicity of biregional fibers are treated with up to 20% of a polymerizable silicone resin. In a further embodiment the thermoplastic or thermoset polymer is in the form of a sheet or panel and said multiplicity of biregional fibers are distributed throughout the polymeric matrix of the sheet or panel in an amount of from about 20 to 75%.

Modified polyimide adhesives useful for high efficiency bonding at moderate temperatures. Basically, the adhesives are prepared by reacting suitable quantities of an oxime, an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and an aliphatic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, esterifying the resulting bisimide with a reactive solvent esterifying agent and mixing therewith a suitable diamine. This copolyimide adhesive may be dried to a selected viscosity before or after coating onto one or both surfaces to be bonded together. When the surfaces are pressed together under moderate pressure and heated for a suitable period at a temperature in the range of about 230.degree. to 320.degree. C. an excellent, flexible bond is obtained, having high peel strength and excellent resistance to high temperatures.

A novel flexible biregional carbonaceous fiber is disclosed comprising an inner core region of a thermoplastic polymeric material and an outer region of a carbonaceous sheath. The flexible biregional carbonaceous fibers are particularly characterized by having a ratio of the radius of the core region with respect to the total radius of the fiber (r:R) of from about 1:4 to about 1:1.05, a density of from about 1.45 to about 1.87 g/cm.sup.3, and a bending strain value of from greater than 0.01 to less than 50%. In a further embodiment of the invention, a biregional precursor fiber is disclosed having an inner core region of a thermoplastic polymeric material and an outer sheath region of a oxidation stabilized, thermoset polymeric material. The oxidation stabilized precursor fiber is characterized by having a density of from about 1.20 to about 1.32 g/cm.sup.3. The invention further resides in methods of making the biregional fibers. Preferred end uses for the biregional fibers are disclosed including thermal insulation; flame resistant and fire blocking insulation; blends of the biregional carbonaceous fibers with other natural or polymeric fibers; coated fibers, composites composed of a polymeric matrix reinforced with the biregional carbonaceous fibers of the invention, electron conductive fibers for battery electrodes, and the like.

A fibrous carbon material is first coated with a thermosetting material which remains flexible after being subjected to curing temperatures. The thermosetting material contains a refractory metal capable of reacting with boron to form a metal boride. This thermosetting resin is then cured. The fibrous carbon material is then impregnated with a second thermosetting resin containing a boron compound and, optionally, a refractory metal capable of reacting with boron to form a metal boride. The second thermosetting resin is at least partially cured and a plurality of layers of the fibrous material is then assembled to form a laminate. The laminate is heated to a temperature sufficient to carbonize the thermosetting resin. The resultant carbon-carbon composite has better oxidation resistance, improved high temperature stability, higher density and improved interlaminar tensile strength than does a composite prepared without the presence of the refractory metal in the thermosetting resin.

The RCC composite material is formed from a fiber reinforcement of layers or plies of thin ply carbon fiber fabric impregnated with a carbon matrix. Carbon nanotube reinforcement in the matrix further improves impact resistance. The stacking arrangement of the plies of the thin ply fabric also further improves impact resistance.

The support layer and the adsorption layer are bonded together to form the clothing material suitable for the hunter clothing and the protective clothing by way of bonding or needle punching. Accordingly, when the wearer's body heat and body odor try to pass through the clothing made from the material, the body heat may smoothly pass through the adsorption layer while the body odor is blocked and filtered out by the activated carbon fiber. Thus, the requirements of hunter clothing may be satisfied. Furthermore, the odors or toxins trying to pass through the adsorption layer may be filtered out, and the requirements of the chemically protective clothing and hunter clothing may be satisfied.
