Device for feeding metal into melting plant, in particular into melting furnace including hearth and lateral aperture. Device includes means to feed metal terminally associated with a connection conveyor including a loading plane and cooperating with translation and positioning means. Connection conveyor able to assume first position during continuous loading step, wherein its front terminal end is located substantially flush with the furnace internal wall through the aperture, to introduce metal inside the furnace; a second position distanced from the furnace wall during the step of tapping liquid metal from the furnace; and a third position while first loading the furnace, with the furnace switched off, wherein its loading plane front end is inside the furnace volume to be disposed in proximity to the distal internal wall opposite the furnace proximal internal wall, to unload and distribute a charge to cover at least part of the furnace bottom surface.

A process for the treatment of loads or residues of non-ferrous metals and their alloys includes the steps of loading of scraps or dross to be processed and heating the load and melting the metal. The process additionally includes revolving the heated load, tapping the molten metal and emptying a cavity of the furnace. Heating of the load or residues to a temperature above the melting temperature of the metal or non-ferrous alloy to be recovered is carried out by a free burning convective arc which is independent from the supply of external gas to the process, and which may dispense with the use of melting salts.

The present invention provides an arc-melting apparatus which attains extremely high efficiency by preheating scraps using exhaust gas from the melting chamber. The arc-melting apparatus needs for no device to carry and supply an iron source to a melting chamber, which makes it possible to preheat the next charge. The arc-melting apparatus has a melting furnace which melts scraps, a preheating shaft connected directly to an upper part of one side of the melting furnace, an arc electrode for melting scraps in the melting furnace, a bucket for supplying scraps to the preheat shaft so as to continuously maintain scraps in the melting furnace and in the preheating shaft, a tapping portion having a tapping hole, being projected outward from the melting furnace and a tilting device for tilting the melting furnace on a side of the tapping portion. The tapping portion is arranged at an orthogonal direction to the direction of the supplied cold iron source. The preheating shaft of the melting furnace and the tapping portion have a distance between the mutual part, so that scraps do not flow out on a the tapping hole side.

A pyrometallurgical vessel suitable for continuous or semicontinuous smelting and/or conversion of molten base metal sulfide feed materials. The top blown, bottom stirred vessel includes oxidizing gas lances and feed pipes directing their respective contents directly or indirectly into bath eyes opened up in the molten bath by gas injected through porous plugs disposed at the base of the vessel. Low space velocities in the vessel result in reduced dusting.

In order to melt particulate material in an electric furnace with the help of at least one electric arc burning between a burner electrode arranged in the lid of the furnace and a bottom electrode arranged in the bottom of the furnace, the material is introduced into a space surrounding the electric arc. It is melted by the radiation heat of the electric arc and is collected in a melt bath covering the bottom part of the furnace. In order to attain a high energy exploitation and to prevent the material to be melted from being extracted, a fixed bed of the material to be melted is formed in the space surrounding the electric arc, which takes its root on the bottom part of the furnace and peripherally surrounds the electric arc. The material is melted on the side of the fixed bed facing the electric arc. The fixed bed is moved approximately radially towards the center of the furnace to an extent corresponding to the melted material volume. The material to be melted is charged between the fixed bed and a shell externally surrounding the fixed bed.

A tiltable arc furnace with a platform (5) supported on rolling-contact cradles (10) is designed so that the furnace shell (2) resting on a mobile carriage (6) can be moved approximately one furnace length on the platform (5) transversely to the pouring direction. The platform (5) is prolonged at one end and provided with appropriate travelling lines (8) comprising rails (9). As a result, a structure of unitary design is achieved, the tilting moments are limited to low values and expensive blocking and stopping systems can be omitted.

An electrically conductive refractory lined crucible is covered by a refractory lined roof. At least one electrode supported by the roof extends downwardly into the crucible for melting the flux within the crucible. The crucible lining itself functions as the second electrode. The roof and the crucible are air-tight thereby preventing air from entering the crucible. An exhaust port located in the upper portion of the roof is connected to a vacuum device for exhausting fumes from the crucible and for controlling the atmosphere within the crucible.

A smelting furnace for metal such as aluminum or aluminum-base alloy having a relatively low melting point comprising a rotatable lower furnace body having an upper opening and an upper furnace body secured to a frame and having a lower opening for covering the opening of the lower furnace body. A feed inlet chamber is formed in a peripheral portion of the upper furnace body and positioned above the opening of the lower furnace body. The feed inlet chamber has opposite side walls extending downward to the upper edge of the lower furnace body to separate the feed inlet chamber from the interior chamber of the furnace.

A closed electric smelting furnace is provided with a cylindrical partition wall of substantially the same height as the furnace lid secured to the underside of the lid in a position to surround the electrodes and material feeding chutes. The partition together with the lid defines an annular gas collecting chamber. The raw materials are charged into the furnace to a level where they extend into the annular gas collecting chamber. Dust rich furnace gases rise quickly around the electrodes and collect in the upper portion of the chamber after which they pass slowly outwardly through the raw material so that they are filtered before leaving the furnace though a vent in the furnace lid which is positioned radially outwardly of the partition.
