A power production system is disclosed. The system includes a firebox, and fluid-containing heat transfer coils at the firebox sides. The heated fluid is conducted to a transducer for converting that heat into mechanical work. In the illustrated embodiment, the transducer includes a piston and cylinder arrangement. A converter is disposed adjacent the firebox to receive heat and the gaseous products of combustion from the firebox. The converter chemically converts the gaseous products of combustion into less objectionable materials.

A furnace using pelletized wood as a fuel and a system for controlling the operation of the furnace are described. Pelletized wood stored in a hopper is fed into the combustion chamber of the furnace from an elevated position; and combustion of the pelletized wood is controlled by microprocessor-based circuit which receives input signals representative of the interior and exterior temperatures of the building, the air flow and the level of fuel in the combustion chamber and processes this information in accordance with a predetermined program to switch the furnace into one of two modes. In the `low` mode, the exterior temperature is below a certain value for example, 0.degree. C., but the interior temperature is above it. In this case a fire is maintained in the combustion chamber in anticipation of the interior temperature falling beneath this value. If it does fall beneath this value the fan is switched to a `high` mode and to promote vigorous combustion so that the heat output is sufficient to warm the building. A novel method of manufacturing a heat exchange element for use in the furnace is also described.

After the fly ash is removed from the flue gases by a separator, it is introduced into a combustion chamber which may be either the primary combustion chamber of the furnace or a separate chamber in a secondary combustion chamber. There, it is burned until only the liquid slag remains and then removed, along with the other liquid slag formed in the furnace by the primary combustion process. Various methods and apparatus are described for carrying out the introduction of the fly ash into the combustion chamber. They include: packing the fly ash into separate metal containers to be introduced into a rotating primary combustion chamber of the furnace; mixing the ash with fuel and introducing it into the furnace through a lance; forming the ash into pellets and introducing the pellets into the furnace; blowing the ash through an air lance into the output end of the furnace and into the molten slag therein; and, blowing the ash through an air lance into a separate combustion chamber in the secondary combustion chamber of the incinerator.

Fuel is burned in a primary combustion chamber with less than the air required for stoichiometric combustion so that the combustion gases have a high carbon monoxide (CO) and a hydrocarbon content and the temperature of the gases is held below that at which significant nitrogen oxides (NOx) would be produced. The combustion gases are then passed through a secondary combustion zone in which more air is injected into the gas stream to oxidize the CO and hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide (CO2). The secondary burner comprises a plurality of foraminous tubes through which secondary air is emitted. Combustion in the secondary zone is maintained at a temperature below that at which nitrogen oxides (NOx) will be produced in significant quantities.
