    摘要: A method of and apparatus for operating a supercharger for an automotive engine is disclosed. The supercharger has: an input shaft for coupling to an engine crankshaft, and coupled to the rotor of a first electrical machine and a first component of an epicyclic gear train; and an output shaft connected to a compressor and a second component of the epicyclic gear train; wherein the third component of the epicyclic gear train is connected to the rotor of a second electrical machine. The first electrical machine is selectively operable to supply electrical energy to the second electrical machine. The method includes the steps of: (a) calculating a required speed of the second electrical machine that would give rise to a required pressure at an outlet of the compressor; and (b) setting the speed of the second electrical machine to the calculated required speed.

    摘要: A flywheel assembly for a turbocharger a rotatable flywheel shaft that is separate from a turbocharger shaft, and a flywheel body coupled to the flywheel shaft. A flywheel sensor determines a flywheel operating parameter and supplies a flywheel feedback signal indicative of the flywheel operating parameter, and a flywheel clutch selectively couples the flywheel shaft to the turbocharger shaft. A controller operates the flywheel clutch based on the flywheel feedback signal. The flywheel shaft and flywheel body may be disposed in a flywheel housing that is separate and spaced from a turbocharger housing.

This can result in less heat input and the same work per stroke output, thereby saving fuel. Or it can result in more work per stroke output for the same heat input. A form of dynamic braking can be used with its operation. The only modifications to the engine are adding an external compressor, increasing the internal compression ratio, and changing the timing of the inlet valve closing.

The arrangement includes a compressor mounted in connection with the air inlet of the internal combustion engine. A transmission having a variable gear ratio is located between the crankshaft and a driving shaft arranged in connection with the compressor, and a control unit is arranged to control the gear ratio between the crankshaft and the compressor. When changing from a higher to lower gear, the control unit is arranged to control the gear ratio between crankshaft and compressor so that the gear ratio between these components is reduced, and wherein moment of inertia is transferred from compressor to crankshaft resulting in an acceleration of the crankshaft.
