An engine oil supply system for a motor vehicle and a method of controlling an engine oil supply system of a motor vehicle is disclosed in which, particularly during an engine overrun period or an engine shut-down, kinetic energy from the slowing engine is used to drive an oil pump so as to store oil in an oil accumulator for later use by one or more engine components without the engine using fuel. The stored oil allows a downsized oil pump to be used thereby saving fuel by providing a supply of oil in addition to or as an alternative to the oil supplied from the oil pump.

The cylinder block has an upper end for receiving a cylinder head, a lower end for receiving an oil pan, and a crankshaft receiving portion. The oil circulation pathway is arranged to convey lubricating oil by gravity to at least an area located above the crankshaft receiving portion of the cylinder block for supplying lubricating oil to a crankshaft. The lubricating oil reservoir is arranged to store lubricating oil. The lubricating oil reservoir has an open top end for receiving downwardly flowing lubricating oil. The open top end of the lubricating oil reservoir is arranged relative to the oil circulation pathway such that lubricating oil spilling out of the open top end of the lubricating oil reservoir falls into the oil circulation pathway.

The present invention is related to the automotive industry in general and specifically to the industry that manufactures internal combustion engines. It has to do with a new apparatus which, when added to internal combustion engines, pre-lubricates the movable parts of the engine before the normal system does. The advantages of the present invention in relation to those of the state of the art consist of the fact that its operation does not alter the normal lubrication process and assures pre-lubrication. It may be installed in any engine which requires pre-lubrication before starting up. With modifications in size and mechanical characteristics in one or two parts, it may be adapted to the conditions and characteristics of distinct engines and does not require an additional pump means in order to function. Structurally the system is characterized by consisting of a tank with a deformable means inside it which deforms when the lubricant flows in and which stores potential energy which is freed and propels the lubricant from the deposit to the parts of the engine to be lubricated when a remote control valve is energized and opens.
