Polymer compositions derived from selected alkyl (meth)acrylate ester monomers used in certain weight ratios to provide improved viscosity control and low temperature performance characteristics in phosphate ester aircraft hydraulic fluids is disclosed. Polymer compositions for use as viscosity index improving additives in aircraft hydraulic fluids contain from 40 to 100 weight percent (C.sub.1 -C.sub.10)alkyl (meth)acrylate and zero to 60 weight percent (C.sub.11 -C.sub.20)alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer units. Preferred polymer compositions based on 40 to 70 weight percent (C.sub.1 -C.sub.10)alkyl (meth)acrylate and 30 to 60 weight percent (C.sub.11 -C.sub.15)alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer units combine good solubility in the phosphate ester hydraulic fluids with good viscosity control at low and high temperatures.

F. and about 320.degree. F.; an aqueous alkaline palmitate compound present in an amount sufficient to impart metal lubrication below about 160.degree. F.; an aqueous metallic stearate compound present in an amount sufficient to impart metal lubrication between about 320.degree. F. and 440.degree. F.; a polymeric glycol present in an amount sufficient to provide temperature stability, act as a carrier for the aqueous compounds, and impart a waxy lubrication to the metal; a compound present in an amount sufficient to act as a carrier for the aqueous compounds and to provide a translucent film barrier on the metal; an alkaline buffering agent present in an amount sufficient to provide dispersion, viscosity and stability; a hydrotropic agent present in an amount sufficient to solubilize the lubricating composition. A process is disclosed for lubricating a metal workpiece outer surface prior to cold forming, the process comprising the step of disposing a non-reactive lubricating composition on the workpiece outer surface, the outer surface having been alkaline cleaned, hot water rinsed, acid pickled, and cold water rinsed.

A combination of Mannich type reaction products of ethoxylated alkylated phenol, and alkylated arylamine possess excellent antioxidant properties. The presence of alkylated phenol in the structure is believed to provide a synergistic antioxidant activity with the aromatic amine. Presence of the alkylated aromatic moiety is believed to provide enhanced lubricant solubility compared to unalkylated diphenylamine type antioxidants. Application of these synergistic mixtures of additives and synthetic base stocks in premium automotive and industrial lubricants will significantly enhance stability and extend service life.
