Abstract:
Novel uses of copolymers for removing and/or reducing the level of deposits in the fuel system and/or injection system of direct injection diesel and/or gasoline engines are provided. What is provided is the use of particular copolymers as fuel additive or lubricant additive; to processes for preparation of such additives, and fuels and lubricants added therewith, such as, more particularly, as a detergent additive; to use of these copolymers for reducing the level of or preventing deposits in the fuel systems and especially the injection systems of direct injection diesel engines, especially in common rail injection systems, for reducing the fuel consumption of direct injection diesel engines, especially of diesel engines with common rail injection systems, and for minimizing power loss in direct injection diesel engines, especially in diesel engines with common rail injection systems; and as an additive for gasoline fuels, especially for operation of DISI engines.

The present invention is related to the use of formulations of new random copolymers and terpolymers, synthesized by a method of semi continuous emulsion polymerization, and that function as flow improvers, lowering the pour point and reducing the viscosity of Mexicans crude oils, which have gravities within the range of 9 to 30° API.

Novel copolymers of unsaturated acidic reactants and high molecular weight olefins are useful as dispersants in lubricating oils and fuels and also may be used to prepare polysuccinimides and other post-treated additives useful in lubricating oils and fuels. The ratio of anhydride groups to the hydrocarbon groups in these novel copolymers is at least 1.3.

The first aspect of the invention involves stable emulsions of hydrocarbons and water using a combination of a low molecular weight agent and a high molecular weight material. In another aspect of the invention slurries are formed for fuel purposes utilizing coal particles with hydrocarbons and water and the aforesaid agent and material to achieve a stable combination or non-combustible materials with water alone or in conjunction with other liquids using the aforesaid agent and material. The present invention also is useful as transportation agents in pipelines, to lower pumping costs.

Specified copolymers of tert-butylstyrene are dissolved in a liquid aliphatic hydrocarbon fuel, especially an aircraft fuel, by the steps of (i) blending the finely-divided copolymer with a non-solvent hydroxylic liquid miscible with the fuel, (ii) mixing the blend into the fuel so as to give a copolymer concentration of 0.1-1% by weight, and (iii) dissolving in the fuel so treated an amino compound in an amount of 0.01-0.6 mole per 100 g of copolymer present. The copolymers thus dissolved impart to the fuel a resistance towards mist formation when the fuel is subjected to conditions of shock.
