Cross-linked cyclocopolymers made up of one or more quaternary ammonium salts and sulfur dioxide as monomers. One of the quaternary ammonium salts is also an aspartic acid derivative. The cross-linked copolymers include a repeating unit with multiple chelating centers that different metal ions can bind to. The cross-linked copolymers are zwitterionic or anionic, and can be in either an acidic form or a basic form. A method for removing metal ions from an aqueous sample with these cross-linked copolymers is also described.

A zwitterionic monomer and corresponding cyclopolymerized polyzwitterion (±) (PZ) (i.e. poly(Z-alt-SO2). Phosophonate ester hydroloysis in PZ gave a pH-responsive polyzwitterionic acid (±) (PZA). The PZA under pH-induced transformation was converted into polyzwitterion/anion (±−) (PZAN) and polyzwitterion/dianion (±=) (PZDAN).

Polysulfones and methods for forming polysulfones are disclosed herein. The polysulfones are prepared from thiols and hexahydrotriazines. The thiols may be, for example, dithiols, trithiols, monothiols, or mixtures thereof. The thiols and hexahydrotriazines may be polymerized to form a polythioether. The polythioether may thereafter be oxidized to form a polysulfone. The polysulfones are prepared from an efficient and simple synthetic method, and the properties of the prepared polysulfones can be readily tuned. The prepared polysulfones may have improved thermal properties, improved mechanical properties, and enhanced functionality.

Sulfone-containing polythioethers, compositions containing sulfone-containing polythioethers, methods of synthesizing sulfone-containing polythioethers and the use of sulfone-containing polythioethers in aerospace sealant applications are disclosed. The sulfone-containing polythioethers have sulfone groups incorporated into the backbone of the polythioether. Cured sealant compositions comprising the sulfone-containing polythioethers exhibit enhanced thermal resistance.

The present invention relates to a process for preparing polysulfone, comprising reacting bisphenol monomers with a salt forming agent to form bisphenolate, followed by subjecting the bisphenolate and 4,4′-dihalodiphenyl sulfone to polycondensation to give polysulfone, characterized in that the reaction for forming bisphenolate and the polycondensation are performed in the presence of a composite ionic liquid as the solvent, the composite ionic liquid containing zwitterionic liquid of formula (I) and/or (II) as component A and ionic liquid of formula (III) and/or (IV) as component B, wherein variables are respectively defined in the description of the present invention. The process of the present invention enables a shortened preparation period of polysulfone, particularly a shortened reaction time (including the time of water removal) of the salt forming stage; in addition, the polysulfone thus prepared has an improved molecular weight which is much higher.
