The thin-film-like particles take independent shapes, have a thickness of 0.4 to 10 nm and a breadth in a planar direction of 20 nm or more, and can disperse in a liquid having a relative dielectric constant of 15 or more. The thin-film-like particles are obtained by promoting separation of layers in oxidation of graphite. The particles in their dispersion are placed, along with the dispersion, on a mesh, and dried to obtain an isolated thin film. The thin-film-like particles are reduced to obtain thin-film-like graphite particles and these collective matters.

Unique fired clay pillows are described which are useful for a variety of purposes. They have particular utility in structural applications when they are first rendered impervious, mixed with a hardenable binder, and then cast into a mold or form of desired size and configuration where the binder is hardened, thereby producing a consolidated pillow structure having a high degree of void space. The consolidated pillow structure is fire-resistant, weather-resistant, rot-proof, and exhibits good sound absorption and thermal insulation properties.

Cementitious compositions comprising a hydraulic cementitious material, a compound selected from the group consisting of a polyhydroxy aromatic compound, a polycarboxylic acid-containing compound or a salt thereof, ascorbic acid or a salt thereof, or a combination thereof, and a particulate material or a water soluble silicate-containing material that interacts with the compound are described herein. The polyhydroxy aromatic compound can be a water soluble compound having from two to thirty hydroxyl groups. The particulate material can exhibit a particle size distribution, wherein at least about 90% by weight of the particles have a diameter of less than 2 mm. Suitable particulate materials include nanoparticles and microparticles. The cementitious compositions can be used to form building materials. The cementitious compositions are especially suited for inhibiting corrosion of reinforcing steel bars embedded in concrete mixtures. Methods of making and using the cementitious composition are also disclosed.
