A unique method imparts laser induced patterns and other designs on thin fabrics and leathers. The method uses a laser beam to slightly penetrate the surface of the product at a controlled specific speed. The laser beam is directed at the product either directly or through mirrors, shutters or lenses. The speed of the laser beam relative to the surface of the product is controlled within a predetermined range. Specific identification and control of this relative speed for a particular product are the keys to overcoming technical barriers which have prevented such use of lasers in the past. Preferably a computer is used to provide a signal to a drive mechanism to control the relative speed. The drive mechanism can control movement of the laser, the product, a mirror or a lens.

Closed loop circuitry responsive to web speed, sensed web porosity, and a porosity preset signal provides the precise system control needed to produce and maintain the preset porosity over a wide range of system variables. The illustrative embodiment described is particularly useful for perforating paper, film, and like materials where a high degree of product uniformity and porosity control is desired.

In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, the repetitive bar pattern of plaid material is sampled along the length of the goods by means of light reflected therefrom and auto- and cross-correlation functions of groups of said signals are computed so as to define the pattern of the transverse bars of the plaid. This measured pattern is used within a computer-controlled system for cutting the component pieces of clothing items so as to compensate for nonuniformities or distortions in the bar pattern of the material.

The topographical support member comprises a body having a top surface including a first micro-sized topographical pattern and a pattern of apertures extending through the body. The micro-sized pattern produces a background portion of the fabric and the macro-sized recessed regions produce the raised portions of the fabric. Multiple levels may be provided in the macro-sized region to produce multiple level raised portions.

Selective and multiple wavelength processing are applied for increased coupling efficiency with the epoxy and carbon material components of the composite.

A pulse laser beam of energy distribution having a plurality of peaks is generated (e.g. having a TEM.sub.01 mode or greater) and is directed onto an optical system. The system combines beam-condensing optical elements and multi-beam-splitting prism elements so that the peaks of energy distribution in the laser beam mode fall correspondingly on the cut surfaces of each of the multi-beam-splitting prism elements. Each of the condensing and splitting elements may either be of transmission or reflection type, and further they may be of separate or integral type. Fresnel lenses or meniscus lenses may be used as beam-condensing optical elements. As a result, a plurality of pulse laser beam-condensed spots are produced.

An apparatus for fabricating a perforated web comprising an endless masking plate arranged above a continuously conveyed web. The masking plate has a plurality of apertures arranged in a predetermined pattern, the masking plate being adapted so as to be continuously circulated. The light is irradiated to the web via the masking plate so that apertures or slits are formed in the web corresponding to the apertures of the masking plate. The light may be a laser, an infrared light, or an ultraviolet light, and the light from the source is diverged transversely about the web and converged longitudinally about the web.
