Alkali metal alkylamides, for example, potassium methylamide or mixtures of lithium and potassium methylamides, containing impurities may be purified by a novel process. The first step of the process comprises reacting the alkali metal alkylamides, in solution in methylamine, with ammonia to form the corresponding alkali metal amides which precipitate from solution while the impurities remain dissolved. The solid alkali metal amides are then separated from the solution, e.g., by filtration. The solution containing the impurities is distilled; and the distillate, comprised of methylamine containing some ammonia, is contacted with the alkali metal amides under reflux conditions and then the solution is rectified to remove ammonia. Under these conditions the alkali metal amides react with the methylamine to form a solution in methylamine of alkali metal methylamides freed of impurities. The solution is suitable for use as a catalyst for a deuterium enrichment process.

A novel catalyst for hydrodealkylation of alkylaromatic compounds and a process for producing the catalyst are described. The catalyst comprises the compounds formed from either (a) graphite and (b) an alkali metal or (a) graphite, (b) an alkali metal and (c) at least one compound of a metal selected from the group consisting of Group VIII of the Periodic Table. The catalyst of this invention is capable of selectively producing Ar-C.sub.n.sub.-1 H.sub.2n.sub.-1 from Ar-C.sub.n H.sub.2n.sub.+1, wherein Ar is an aromatic radical.

Metal cyanide catalyst dispersions in initiator compounds and/or polyether are prepared by reacting an acidic metal cyanide compound a zero valent metal in a medium that is a solvent for the acidic metal cyanide compound. The resulting catalyst slurry may be combined with an initiator and/or polyether and stripped to form a catalyst/initiator or catalyst/polyether slurry. Using this method, an active alkylene oxide polymerization catalyst is prepared, and the preparation method is greatly simplified. Further, it is necessary to use a separate organic complexing agent in the preparation.

Polyurethane foam-supported double metal cyanide (DMC) compounds are disclosed as useful catalysts for epoxide polymerization. The catalysts are easy to prepare, and are more active and show reduced induction periods compared with conventional powdered DMC catalysts. The catalysts of the invention can be recovered from the epoxide polymer products and can be reused to catalyze additional epoxide polymerizations.
