Process for the preparation of a particulate dental filler composition, comprising the following steps: (a) introducing a mixture containing (al) a silica precursor component, and (a2) a solution or dispersion of one or more compounds selected from compounds of aluminum, zinc, titanium, zirconium, tungsten, ytterbium, hafnium, bismuth, barium, strontium, silver, tantalum, lanthanum, tin, boron, and cerium, into a pulsed reactor; (b) converting the silica precursor component and the compounds into a particulate mixed oxide with a pulsed gas flow resulting from flameless combustion; (c) isolating the particulate mixed oxide from the pulsed reactor; (d) optionally subjecting the particulate mixed oxide to a heat treatment step; and (e) treating the optionally heat-treated particulate mixed oxide with a silane treatment agent for obtaining a particulate dental filler composition.

A method for producing a dental mill blank, characterized in that the method includes contacting an inorganic filler molded article produced by subjecting an inorganic filler to press molding and a polymerizable monomer-containing composition, and allowing the polymerizable monomer to polymerize and cure. When the method of the present invention is used, a dental mill blank having a high inorganic powder content and excellent mechanical strength is obtained. In addition, the dental mill blank obtained is suitably used in the fabrication of a dental prosthesis having high mechanical strength and excellent gloss retention, by machining a mill blank using a CAD/CAM system.

The present invention provides polymeric substrates comprising a biocompatible coating and methods of preparation thereof. In particular, the coating may be a ceramic material, especially a calcium phosphate material, which may be functionally graded. The invention provides the ability to apply high quality coatings to polymeric substrates without damaging the substrate (e.g., melting the polymeric material). The functionally graded coating can provide crystalline calcium phosphate near the coating interface with the substrate and provide amorphous calcium phosphate at the outer surface of the coating.

The method produces powder particles that are uniformly coated with functional groups. It includes homogenizing, in an agitator mill, a suspension of glass, quartz, glass ceramic, and/or ceramic particles in a suspending agent together with a coating agent, so that the particles in the suspension react with the coating agent in the agitator mill to form the uniformly coated powder particles with functional groups. Preferably a weight ratio of the suspending agent to the particles is from 0.5:1 to 5:1. The suspending agent is preferably an aqueous solvent and the coating agent is preferably a silane. The uniformly coated powder particles have a particle size (d50) of less than 2 μm, have a specific surface of 5 to 40 m2/g, and are free of agglomerates.
