    摘要: The socket (2) comprises a metallic outer shell (4), an intermediate shell (5) of plastics and a metallic inner shell (6), which may be inserted into the latter using a connection by shape. The outer shell (4) is divided into segments (4a, 4b, 4c, 4d, 4e) by recesses (9) open towards its equatorial marginal region. The outer shell (4) and the inner shell (6) are rigidly supported against each other in the direction of a common main axis (A) by a contact portion (8), and are non-rotatably connected by an attachment element (15) eccentrically offset with respect to the main axis (A). The intermediate shell (5) has an aperture (20), which receives the contact portion (8), and an outer surface (21), which has a supporting portion (21a) for bearing onto a portion of the inner surface (18) of the outer shell (4), and outside this supporting portion (21a) delimits with the remaining portion of the inner surface (18) a spacing (S), which allows corresponding relative movement of the intermediate shell (5), which contains the inner shell (6), and at least one of the segments (4a, 4b, 4c, 4d, 4e) of the outer shell (4) transversely to the main axis (A). The implanted outer shell (4) may, under load, elastically deform with the part of the bone by which it is surrounded, while the spherical shape of the inner shell (6) remains undisturbed.

    摘要: A method for making a composite material for implantation in the body which is able to act as a matrix for the biological ingrowth of bone and is suitable as a bearing surface. The method consists of compression molding the implant by forming to net shape the first material to its desired end device and inserting it into a mold cavity. Polyethylene in is then placed onto the first material, and the mold is subjected to heat and pressure for specific time durations. The end result is polyethylene which is fully interdigitated into the first material to a desired depth which is controlled by temperature, pressure and time constraints. The present method creates an interface between the first material and the polyethylene which is securely fixed and does not allow micro and macro motion between the two materials. The compression molding process optimizes the mechanical and wear properties of the polyethylene, and enables the new material to provide a smooth and frictionless bearing surface on one side of the composite material. The opposite side of the composite material is porous and thus allows for biological ingrowth of new bone or cement interdigitation. The first material provides structural stability, yet allows flexibility and load transfer to improve biological interface characteristics and a more normal bony remodeling that are lacking in other acetabular cups. An acetabular cup constructed with the composite material is also disclosed.

    摘要: A hip cup for use as an acetabular component in a hip prosthesis including a shell part having a partially convex outer surface. The shell part is insertable in a cavity having an inner surface that is substantially defined by the outer surface of a segment of a sphere. The outer surface of the shell part substantially corresponds to the outer surface of a part of an ellipsoid and has an apex. During positioning of the shell part in the cavity, the shell part has a circumferential edge contacting the longitudinal edge of the cavity, with a space formed between the inner surface of the cavity and the apex of the shell part. A tool has an end releasably attachable to the shell part and a striking end. A handle on the tool permits positioning the tool and shell part to the cavity and striking the end to enact the shell in the part in a selected position.
