An apparatus for controlling a current type inverter including a bridge circuit of bridge-connected self-extinguish elements triggered by pulse width modulation signals. A current is provided for applying a single or plural triggering pulses having a desired pulse width to those self-extinguish elements connected in series with the other self-extinguish elements forming the pairs in the bridge circuit and which other self-extinguish elements are turned on by the pulse width modulation signals. By the above manner of control, the current type inverter can generate output currents of sinusoidal waveform, and the value of the output currents can be controlled over a very wide range.

When a frequency command signal is applied to the logic circuit, the logic circuit generates pulse signals for turning on or off the self-extinction devices, and the pulse signals are delayed for predetermined time in their trailing edges in response to the leading edges of the signals by the pulse stretchers so as to be extended, are amplified by the gate amplifiers, and then are supplied to the gates of the self-extinction devices.

A large capacity (1-2 MkVA) driving system for variable-speed-driving an AC motor by a power converter (inverter, converter) in which GTO (gate turn-off) thyristors are used as switching devices. In this system, high frequency GTO thyristors are connected in series, power converters are multiplexed, the AC motor is used in its plural phases, instantaneous spatial vector PWM (pulse width modulation) control is performed, vector control for the motor is performed, and a circuit for recovering snubber energy for GTO thyristors and a power factor adjusting circuit are provided. Thus, this driving system provides a torque ripple of 1% or less, speed response of 60 rad/sec or more, efficiency of 95% or more and a power factor of 98% or more.

In a magnetic pole position detection unit 12, counter electromotive forces of the synchronous motor 1 are estimated from a relationship between the detection use voltages Vup, Vvp and Vwp and current difference vectors of the motor current to determine a magnetic pole position &thgr; through calculation. The determined magnetic pole position &thgr; is inputted to coordinate conversion units 8 and 11 and a motor speed detection unit 13. Thereby, a motor control device having a control characteristic of a good response property with no magnetic pole position sensor is provided for a control system of a synchronous motor.
