The present invention provides an isolated power supply circuit with a programmable function and a control method thereof. The isolated power supply circuit includes: a transformer circuit, a power switch circuit, a control circuit, and a discharge circuit. The control circuit generates an operation signal and a bleeding signal according to a setting signal. The discharge circuit is coupled to an output node, for generating a discharging current. When the programmable output voltage at the output node switches between different predetermined levels, in a transition period, the bleeding signal adjusts the discharging current to discharge the output node, such that the transition period is shortened.

In order to energize a load with an output current generally conforming to a control voltage, trains of firing pulses are alternately applied during respective conduction intervals of a recurrence period to a pair of main thyristors connected to opposite terminals of a balanced power supply which may be a DC source. The main thyristors are quenched, at the ends of their respective conduction intervals, by ancillary thyristors which lie in series with a resonant circuit including a commutating capacitor and alternately receive firing pulses in continuous succession in order to keep that capacitor operatively connected at all times to one or the other terminal of the power supply. The transmission of firing pulses to the several thyristors is timed by a logic circuit under the control of a comparator to which the control voltage is fed together with a sawtooth voltage establishing the aforementioned recurrence period.

The number of chops per half-cycle of output fundamental frequency is decreased as fundamental frequency is increased so as to keep the switching frequency of the inverter within the capabilities of the power switching devices used while obtaining maximum harmonic suppression. The chop number is changed between sequential frequency ranges. In a preferred form the chop width is continuously varied as output frequency is varied to decrease output amplitude with decreasing frequency to enable constant torque operation of an induction motor load.

An ON pulse is generated responsive to the second pulse and the phase reference signal and an OFF pulse responsive to the first pulse and the phase reference signal. A negative bias signal is generated following the OFF pulse. At the time of operation stop the negative bias signal following the ON and OFF pulses is applied to GTO thyristors simultaneously.
