Cylinder barrels are connected to the crankcase and include cylinder bores with cylinder heads connected to the cylinder barrels. The cylinder heads are integrated with portions of the cylinder barrels forming at least the cylinder bores to form cylinder blocks. The cylinder blocks and the crankcase are fastened together by a plurality of fastening bolts having axes parallel to the axes of the cylinder bores and extending through at least the cylinder blocks, with a compressive structure in the axial direction of the fastening bolts.

To simplify the connection of a cylinder barrel and a cylinder head to, a crankcase and to reduce the weight of an engine. A liquid-cooled engine is provided with the crankcase wherein a cylinder barrel having a water jacket on the cylinder side for cooling is connected to the crankcase. A cylinder head is connected to the cylinder barrel. A plurality of mounting bosses extend from fitting planes to a crankcase of the cylinder barrels and to cylinder heads that are integrated with cylinder blocks. The cylinder barrels and the cylinder heads are integrated in a state in which the mounting bosses encircle the cylinder bores and the cylinder blocks are fastened to the crankcase by bolts inserted into each mounting boss.

A compression ratio-changing device for an internal combustion engine, includes an oil passageway formed through a connecting rod of the engine and connected to a hydraulic oil source. A combustion chamber volume-changing device is provided in the piston and operable by means of hydraulic pressure supplied from the hydraulic oil source through the oil passageway for changing the volume of the combustion chamber and hence changing the compression ratio of the engine. A hydraulic pressure control valve is arranged in the connecting rod for controlling the supply of the hydraulic pressure to the combustion chamber volume-changing device. A driving device is provided at a cylinder block of the engine for driving the hydraulic pressure control valve to cause the combustion chamber volume-changing device to change the volume of the combustion chamber.

An intake system for a direct fuel injection diesel engine is disclosed which has a cylinder block with a cylinder slidingly receiving a piston. A cylinder head is mounted on the cylinder block, and a fuel injector is adapted to directly inject fuel into a combustion chamber formed between the lower side of the cylinder head and the upper side of the piston, wherein the cylinder head has first and second intake passages which are independent of each other and which are adapted to introduce air into the combustion chamber. The first intake passage is oriented substantially tangentially to the combustion chamber and substantially orthogonally to the axis of the cylinder, and has a helical end portion opening into the combustion chamber to form a swirl of air flowing therethrough. The second intake passage is oriented such that the end portion thereof, adjacent the combustion chamber, is closer to the central axis of the cylinder than the end portion of the first intake passage adjacent the combustion chamber. The second intake passage is provided with an intake controller which prevents air from flowing in the second intake passage at low engine speeds but allows air to flow in the second intake passage at high engine speeds.

A method for controlling the quantity of fuel being supplied to an internal combustion engine having a power transmission means for transmitting engine torque to vehicle wheels. The fuel quantity is controlled to a required value after termination of a fuel cut operation which is effected at deceleration of the engine, by increasing a quantity of fuel set at least as a function of intake pipe pressure by an increment which is set in synchronism with generation of pulses of a predetermined control signal. The increase of the fuel quantity is effected for a period of time after a transition of the operative state of the engine from the fuel cut operation to a normal operation wherein fuel supply is effected has been detected and before a predetermined number of pulses of the above control signal generated are generated, so long as the power transmission means remains in a disengaged state. Preferably, the above increase of the fuel quantity is effected only when the engine speed is lower than predetermined rpm. Further, the increase of the fuel quantity is prohibited while the power transmission means remains in an engaged state. Instead, while the power transmission means is in an engaged state, the fuel quantity is determined as a function of a value of intake pipe pressure which is set by subtracting a value dependent upon the engine speed from a detected value of intake pipe absolute pressure, until all the engine cylinders are supplied with fuel after the transition to the normal operation of the engine has been detected.

A fuel injection control method for injecting fuel into a plurality of cylinders of an internal combustion engine in predetermined sequence starting from a fuel injection into a particular one of the cylinders, in synchronism with generation of pulses from crank angle position-detecting means indicative of predetermined crank angle positions of the engine, wherein when one of the cylinders which corresponds to a first pulse from the crank angle position-detecting means generated immediately after generation of a pulse from cylinder-discriminating means indicative of the above particular cylinder is other from the particular cylinder, the sequence of fuel injections into the cylinders is changed so as to effect a first fuel injection into the above particular cylinder immediately after the generation of the above pulse from the cylinder-discriminating means and then effect fuel injections into the other cylinders in the above predetermined sequence. The method is adapted to perform a fail safe function in the event of occurrence of an abnormality in the cylinder-discriminating means. The number of times of the above changing of the fuel injection sequence is counted up to a predetermined value, the cylinder-discriminating means is regarded as abnormal. Then, injection of fuel into the cylinders is effected in the above predetermined sequence in synchronism with pulses from the crank angle position-detecting means alone, irrespective of generation of subsequent pulses from the cylinder-discriminating means.

An electronic fuel injection control system for an internal combustion engine, includes means for correcting the valve opening of the exhaust gas recirculation valve by the use of a correction coefficient so as to maintain the recirculating quantity of exhaust gases at a constant ratio with respect to the total intake air quantity, irrespective of changes in the ambient atmospheric pressure, and means for correcting the injection period for fuel being supplied to the engine as a function of atmospheric absolute pressure and intake pipe absolute pressure, whereby the air/fuel ratio of the mixture is maintained at an optimum value against changes in the atmospheric pressure, even when exhaust gas recirculation is effected.

A system for control of the flow rate of a fluid being supplied to an internal combustion engine. The system includes a flow rate control valve for controlling the flow rate of a fluid being supplied to the engine, a pulse motor for driving the flow rate control valve, position detecting means for detecting the position of the flow rate control valve with respect to a reference position to produce two different levels of output, depending upon a detected valve position, and an electrical circuit responsive to the output of the position detecting means to drive the pulse motor. At the start of the engine, the electrical circuit is operable to drive the pulse motor in directions as a function of the output of the position detecting means, stopping same upon a certain change in the level of the above output, which corresponds to the reference position and hence setting it to a predetermined position preset as a function of parameters of the operating condition of the engine. The system is also provided with a function of monitoring the actual pulse motor position as well as a fail safe diagnosis function for the position detecting means and its related parts.
