A failure diagnosis apparatus and method permit specification of a failed atmospheric pressure sensor in an engine control apparatus having redundant pressure detection systems to ensure failsafe control of the engine. The apparatus includes a calculating unit that calculates a difference between a first atmospheric pressure and a second atmospheric pressure detected in respective pressure detection systems. A first comparing unit outputs an alarm when the difference is larger than a threshold value. A difference calculating unit calculates a first difference between the first atmospheric pressure and a manifold pressure. A difference calculating unit calculates a second difference between the second atmospheric pressure and the manifold pressure. A second comparing unit compares the first and second differences in response to output of the alarm from the first comparing unit while an engine is stopped. A liquid-cooled engine is provided with the crankcase wherein a cylinder barrel having a water jacket on the cylinder side for cooling is connected to the crankcase. A cylinder head is connected to the cylinder barrel. A plurality of mounting bosses extend from fitting planes to a crankcase of the cylinder barrels and to cylinder heads that are integrated with cylinder blocks. The cylinder barrels and the cylinder heads are integrated in a state in which the mounting bosses encircle the cylinder bores and the cylinder blocks are fastened to the crankcase by bolts inserted into each mounting boss.

A hydraulic system for controlling the operation of the intake or exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine. For each valve there is a sealed hydraulic chamber with one plunger driven by a rotating cam to a camshaft and another plunger for actuating the valve. A single solenoid valve is connected by a separate passage having a check valve to each of a plurality of hydraulic chambers. The single solenoid valve can be opened during the actuation of any one of the valves to cause rapid closing of the valve by draining the hydraulic oil from the hydraulic chamber without causing premature actuation of another valve or effecting the subsequent operation of other valves after closing of the single solenoid valve.

In an air-fuel ratio control method for electronically controlling the air-fuel ratio of a mixture being supplied to an internal combustion engine for a vehicle in response to operating conditions of the engine, a predetermined value of a parameter indicative of loads on the engine is set which corresponds at least to a detected value of a parameter indicative of the gear position of the transmission of the vehicle, and when a detected value of the engine load parameter is smaller than the set predetermined value, leaning of the mixture is effected. As the detected value of the above gear position parameter indicates a lower speed gear position, the above predetermined value of the above engine load parameter is set to a smaller value. Preferably, the predetermined value of the engine load parameter is set to a value also correponding to a detected value of engine temperature and/or a detected value of engine speed, in addition to a detected value of the gear position parameter.

An air intake side secondary air supply system for an internal combustion engine provided with an air/fuel ratio feedback control operation, comprises a pressure responsive air control valve which controls the communication through a secondary air supply passage, i.e., the amount of the air intake side secondary air supplied to the engine. A first control pressure for opening the air control valve and a second control pressure for closing the air control valve is alternately supplied to the air control valve in accordance with a detected state of the air/fuel ratio of the engine. The system is further provided with a device for respectively controlling the speed of the supply of the first and second control pressure, which in turn causes the variation of the speed of the air/fuel ratio control.

The state of engagement of the power transmission means is detected for a period of time after a transition of the operative state of the engine from the fuel cut operation to a normal operation wherein fuel supply is effected has been detected and before a predetermined number of pulses of the above predetermined control signal are generated. Among a plurality of predetermined groups of fuel increments having different fuel quantity increasing characteristics from each other, one group is selected which corresponds to the detected state of engagement of the power transmission means, to effect the above increasing of the fuel quantity by the use of the selected group of fuel increments.

The electronic circuit comprises a constant-voltage regulated power-supply circuit, a control circuit having a central processing unit for controlling electrical apparatus installed in the vehicle, and a detecting circuit for detecting variations in supply voltage supplied from the power-supply circuit. The detecting circuit is adapted to generate an output signal when the supply voltage of the power-supply circuit is out of a predetermined range. The electronic circuit further includes circuitry responsive to the output signal of the detecting circuit to render the central processing unit inoperative and an alarm responsive to the same output signal to give warnings.
