Abstract: An energy absorber according to various embodiments can include a structure having a predetermined cross-sectional profile. A hollow profile is formed within the structure. The pre-determined cross-sectional profile of the structure is configured based on a deceleration-time profile that includes a first period and a second period. The first period is defined by a substantially sharp and linear increase in magnitude of the deceleration of an impact until a maximum deceleration value is achieved. The second period is defined by a rapid decrease in the magnitude of the deceleration.

Abstract: A battery cell includes an electrode stack including a pair of an anode and a cathode and a separator. Operation of the battery cell causes gas or moisture to form. The battery cell further includes a stiff frame. The frame includes a hollow portion. The electrode stack is disposed within the hollow portion. The frame includes a portion of the frame that is porous or includes a gas diffusion membrane. The battery cell further includes an electrolyte disposed within the frame and in contact with the electrode stack and a functional material disposed within the battery cell and outside of the hollow portion. The functional material absorbs the gas/moisture. The portion of the frame that is porous or includes a gas diffusion membrane enables the gas/moisture to exit the hollow portion and come into contact with the functional material while maintaining the electrolyte within the frame.

Abstract: High-strength aluminum components and methods for preparing a high-strength aluminum component are provided. Methods of forming high-strength aluminum components include heating an aluminum alloy blank above a solvus temperature, quenching the aluminum alloy blank, and stamping the aluminum alloy blank in a die to form an aluminum component having a predetermined shape. A plurality of localized plastic deformations are introduced to select regions of the aluminum component, and the aluminum component is subject to one or more aging treatments including heating the aluminum component to a temperature below the solvus temperature. The localized plastic deformations serve as nucleation sites for precipitation hardening during the one or more aging treatments to form a plurality of strengthened regions in the aluminum component.

Abstract: An anode for a rechargeable battery cell includes an electrode substrate and a current collector fixed to the electrode substrate. The anode also includes an active layer arranged on the current collector and having discrete first material sections and second material sections arranged in an alternating pattern. Each discrete material section is aligned perpendicular to the current collector. The active layer is configured to intercalate transient ions during charging of the battery cell and de-intercalate the transient ions during discharging of the battery cell. A method of manufacturing such an anode for a rechargeable battery cell is also considered.
